Scotland/Alba weather discussion - Jan 2021 onwards

For those playing temperature bingo tonight, here's the Dee Valley and Strathdon's numbers.

Currently at Chateau Sanserit, my pws is showing -5.7c/-6.8c, who knows what it'll drop to later.

@SanseritI'll raise you with a -7.4/-7.9C half a mile along the road from me. That beats the previous low for this winter of -7.0C in the early hours of the 9th Jan.

-7.3c now, so the coldest night this winter so far.

Mentioned to the other half that it would be a good idea to get the fortnightly shop in tomorrow - doesn't believe the Met forecast warnings - "never right so far".  Just illustrates how those not weather obsessed can get very blasé about the warnings when they've been invariably wrong round here.

A few inches of snow will suffice, the last really heavy snow back in 2010 managed to rip off the guttering on both sides of the house so kind of don't want a repeat performance!  Now that has been mentioned, guaranteed to rain

I had to double check to see if I hadn't clicked the on daft thread by mistake...the excitement is ramping up in here is it not...have you lot not seen snaw before..???

We've had a wee dusting earlier on it was just enough to whiten the road, it does feel quite bitter outside even though its only showing +0.5deg/C air temp,

I have absolutley no idea what to expect in the next few days best just to look out the window to see whats happening I think.

Up for a nature call just now and looked out.   Couldn't believe it was raining!   Temp 1.3c/0.3c/ENE/998.5.   Precipitation showing on the radar as snow but slightly north of me running east to west.  The southern uplands appears to have plenty precipitation showing as snow which is slowly moving north towards Fife, but doesn't appear to have enough oomph in it as it just disappears when it reaches the Forth.

Only saving grace so far is the constant movement of the gritters past the house.   Must be expecting something I guess!

The radar is so interesting. It’s like a feeder band of showers are being sucked up the forth then slamming in tothe front and intensifying instantly over Stirling then moving north . Fantastic to see !

It was snowing here earlier has stopped for now, can see it changing to rain as temperature has went up a bit

Joint coldest night of winter here so far at minus 9. The coldest its been here in the last couple of years was minus 14 on the 31st January 2019 

News on the radio reporting temperatures of minus 15 in Scotland last night. Honestly, that wouldn't surprise me.

Same here... Not sure if its rain, sleet or wet snow as its only light, but its not white outside!

I had expected to wake up to a dusting...but temp 2c it looks like a damp grey day ahead.

Not sure if intensity will help but looking at the regionals Yorkshire and surrounding have 5-10cm .. and that’s coming north this am. Will be rain here for sure but higher areas might do well

Hi guys total amateur here, any chance of weather warnings being upgraded or extended this week

 

my local weather station in dundee is 2 miles inland and is 95 metres above sea level and shows it snowing everyday from now until Monday on met office 

 

 

[A Winter's Tale]

It seems we are in the wrong side of marginal for now. I think we’ll have to endure a period of rain before conditions become favourable for snow. 

The overnight runs were pretty interesting - most of the models looking very good for an easterly. It’s a bit concerning to see the GFS not on the same page as the other models though it’s still a snowy run. 

I notice the provisional mean temperature for January in Scotland was 0.5C. Very impressive - the coldest month since December 2010, the joint 4th coldest month of the past 30 years,  and the the 15th coldest January since 1884.

Lowest temperature of the winter here overnight at -7.5c, currently -5.1c and rising but we have cloud cover so I’m assuming that’s why.

Was 1.6°C at 4am. 1. 1°C an hour ago. Now 0.7°C and snow bucketing down. Got to drive to Biggar. I may be some time.

To say that this weather type was not what I was expecting to wake up to this morning is an understatement.  

At tea last night, I was sitting listening to Helen Worth giving the forecast, and overnight looked pretty snowy for a good part of eastern Scotland from the borders upwards.   I have lost a lot of faith in the BBC forecasts lately, especially as Helen Worth, admittedly a few years ago now, used to be the top forecaster when it was linked to the Met Office.   Didn't they used to put their own interpretation on the incoming data back then?   I mean as Meteorologists, what the heck are they there for? Obviously there was a good explanation for our area missing out overnight, I think LS touched on the uncertainty.   I know that some of them are just presenters, but she (and others) certainly aren't.  Sometimes I feel they would be just as effective standing there in front of a sheet of wallpaper! Totally overshadowed by our own forecasters here on Netweather and that includes our amateurs)    I think the gritters must be linked to the BBC (or the Daily Express) as well, as they haven't stopped here  all night and are still going!  

Anyhoo, rant over!...Morning folks!
