Think I will avoid the Wunderland app it now has London 32 and Mansfield 31. I doubt they have dropped 3c in 30 minutes

The difference is that this heatwave is going to see temperatures that exceed your body temperature, which makes it infinitely more lethal than 1976. Spending any length of time out in 38c+ is dangerous. That's the message people are trying to convey, as invariably there will be thousands of idiots about saying oh its just a nice hot day.....and then end up in hospital.

Thats the most important point mb..once outside temps exceed your body temp there is no way the body can cool down naturally..dangerous situation that can lead to heat exhaustion or worse, particularly in the elderly and more vulnerable. I lived through 76 and it was tough but on no occasion did the temp exceed the body temp. I think the water situation here in the south east is becoming like 76, particularly if no rain falls for a few more weeks yet...standpipes?  Well who knows. Take care everyone and try and stay cool..

No records gonna be set here, still "only" 26.8C, never likely to really.

Hey all.

Just weighing up my options. Would it be harmful for me to do a 20-25 minute walk to work at 3pm (the hottest part of the day) when the temperatures are forecast to reach 35c?

Thanks in advance 🙂

On the subject of body temp/not being able to cool - i assume humidity affects it - can anyone advise what "good" looks like for humidity once temp exceeds 37 ish degrees?

Do you want low or high humidity?

Current got 48% outdoors and 39% indoors.

Actually I think Farnham might be leading the way as currently showing 34c (see comment from Cobbett above)

Low so that sweat can be removed more efficiently. Just drink cold water when temeratures are above body temperature. Well drink cold water anyway when its hot but especially over 37C.

1976 was just a constant barrage of moderate heat, with a 2 week exceptional period. This is clearly very different.

76 is like someone slapping you hard 60 times in a row. 2022 more like a heavyweight boxer delivering two haymaker.

Not sure id want either really!

Reading Uni has seen quite a marked increase. From 13.2 to 30! That I’m aware of it’s a very reliable station and actually shows wet bulb too (18.7c).

You see so many on Twitter discredit Heathrow as it’s an airport and has ‘all those planes’ yet actually it’s not even ahead now and I’m not aware of it holding any actual record. Besides, any built up area will be warmer - and that’s the relevant part. You’d feel that, if you’re there, and not the temp in a field 😂

No. The highest official max at 11am is still Wisley, 32.0C.

Thanks. Thats the bit i'm good at - staying hydrated. Have found a little spray bottle for water which is ideal for cooling.. for me and the pets 🙂

I know. I only report Davis fan aspirated stations. Its easy to tell them apart if you have a subscription. Just go to data output of a specific station on the WeatherLink Network and most of the times you will get a description of the exact Davis model. I discount all passive stations and report fan aspirated models only.

I have a subscription, and there's nothing on the map - no filters, to tell them apart.

Boulmer on the Northumberland coast already a whisker (1C) at 11am from breaking it's August 1990 (all time) record of 28C ........wont excite those who like a headline, but to have temperatures like this when the sea is only 13C is quite remarkable...

Need to keep up the 2C per hour increase for a while if record is going. 36C by 1pm would be ideal.

Essex leading the way! Perhaps a 40 is doable somewhere in the county. I knew we was ahead since we had no cloud interruptions
