Models have now gone off the idea of anything 'plumey' towards the end of next week. This is looking very '2018' albeit with the HP settling in earlier in the year this time.

2018 was great for BBQs and a tan, not so much for storms.

What would you say this is? A tornadoburst?

Wasn't that the year of the confirmed london supercell? I could see it from here and also had a brilliant import that night that arrived about midnight and lasted for 1.5 hours. 😄

This one? (As seen from down here on the IOW, taken by Jamie Russell):

The Spring was good, but the summer offered nothing for most of us apart from that very hot late July afternoon that went bang for some eastern counties.

I think that was the year that I had a mental storm too

Yep, and there was another a week later that hit Kent in the night about 2am, the lighting in that one was mental, about an hour's or so of constant lighting nonstop rumble, and most people slept through it lol. The gust front blew our fence down, and the landlord wouldn't believe us, was the only problem.

You can probably tell I’m getting pretty restless waiting for the exciting weather to come back. Not to take for granted how lovely it was today with the sun and the early summer warmth…

next week looks interesting …

What on earth is going on there?

Photoshop, I suspect, is the answer!

I am so confused by this but I'm going to say photoshop plus rainbows aren't physical things and their light isn't affected by lightning. We've seen lightning inside a rainbow crawl outside many times, it wouldn't affect the light of it.

Thought I'd do a similar post but more of a #throwbackthursday one as convective activity is currently pretty quiet.

On the 9th September of last year I finally managed to capture a clear lightning bolt in the daytime, after trying to capture it for a good 15 minutes. Following on a rather quiet summer last year for my locality, September massively made up for it, and brought some other spectacular storms, particularly by night.

It’s another random image I got from AI - I’m kind of fascinated by the things it makes and while we wait for the weather to turn more changeable it’s the closest I can get to anything thundery at the moment ☺️

Albeit short that is a great capture - really clear with the flash and a beautiful fork.

Bet the crackle from that was impressive 😃

Here are some interesting phenomena:

Article 1 - lightning from a noctilucent cloud:

Could contain: Nature, Outdoors, Storm, Thunderstorm, Lightning, Night

this is entirely possible but it is quite hard to photograph unless you have your own space programme (I borrowed my Dad’s)

Article 2 - lightning from the Milky Way:

Could contain: Nature, Outdoors, Storm, Thunderstorm, Blackboard, Sky, Lightning

Fortunately this one didn’t reach our Earth (they can be quite distracting and loud)

Article 3 - North Pole thunderstorms. These daft clouds are caused when icebergs become negatively charged

Could contain: Nature, Outdoors, Storm, Thunderstorm, Animal, Fish, Sea Life, Shark

Any potential thunderstorms remain +10 days away in the models, where they've been for some time! I wonder how long this block will remain. All that instability over Iberia and the Med, but nothing to drive it our way!

The operational runs of the GFS in recent days has been toying with an idea of something thundery into next week. Looks like it's trying to form a trough half way between Portugal and Azores and then send it up north our direction.

Other operational model runs such as GEM and ECM not showing much, so we'll have to wait and see if the other models join the GFS, or alternatively  GFS drops this signal. Ensembles for different models do show some rainfall (and maybe some of that potential convective activity) into later next week too, but that may disappear or continue to be pushed back.
