The perfect night here for fireworks. Clear starry sky, flat calm and chilly. Down to 07.5°C.

This after a mostly sunny day following morning showers.

Just got back from some at 9pm. It was gorgeous! Not a breath of wind. So even I!!! WASN'T!! Cold.

Ok I had 5,000 layers on but even so...lol

Another case of if today's position of the low was exactly like that in mid December, the Midlands would be under snow.

Good example was March 2023, the 9th.

Starting raining at 5.5C this morning so not that far off it falling as snow now.

Some contrasts between Ciaran and the current low.

Obviously the current one isn't anything like as severe. One "good" thing about Ciaran, I guess, was that it introduced clear polar air from high latitudes behind it, meaning Friday (particularly late in the day) featured dry, cold and clear air - though there were still 1 or 2 showers during the day so yet another in the long run of rain-days.

This low has tracked further north means we are in damper SW-lies again, less invigorating than yesterday's air.

That said I am glad it's this low which went north, and not Ciaran!

It often seems to be the case that we get a temporary blast of clear, cold air behind a big storm. ISTR October 16th 1987 being sunny and cool before damp air returned the following day; the Burns Storm of 1990 definitely had a cooler, drier, sunny interlude (including when the storm was ongoing - that was very notable as a 'dry' storm), the St Judes storm of 2013 the same (lasting 2 or 3 days IIRC) and Eunice also had a dry bright slot late in the day. Presumably the storms were all fuelled by potent cold air clashing with warm air.

Interestingly, London (ON, Canada)'s forecast for the following week (googled it) is very typical for London, UK in November. Much cloud, rain on a good few days, and max temps varying between 6 and 14C. The typical continental-climate late autumn of sunny, frosty days seems to be on hold for now!

Something milder on the horizon thankfully

It's arguably not milder we need, it's drier! We really need an anticyclonic, northerly or easterly type - while the air is still streaming in from the Atlantic, we are always at risk of a heavy rain or strong wind event at this time of year.

Synoptics can be misleading, you would look at this chart and think slow moving pulses of rain nationwide, alas today here has been dry, sunny and calm.

Correct. Never understood people welcoming mild weather then moaning about how cloudy, dark and wet it is.

Definitely two separate party rooms for coldies and hotties with bouncers on the doors to make sure they don't mix! 😱 🤣

Not here it hasn't, quite the opposite, with rain all day and no sunny breaks! 😁

What I've found this year is what was seen as mild/warm only 10 years ago is now seen as cold by certain people.  You can bet your bottom dollar at the end of the year, some will claim 2023 has been a cold year when in actual fact it will at the very least be one of the warmest, if not THE warmest on record!

Yes, some claimed the summer was cold!
