So here we go, out with old, and........in with the same old weather. The overnight low of 6.4°C at: 07:10, has crept up to 9.5°C, RH85% and a light SW breeze.

Oh..

Sandbanks was heaving.Sunny when we left home earlier. Drove back in the rain.

Now to take the outside lights down. The most wonderful time of the year.

Yeah, Purbeck was starting to vanish as we left.  We were going to walk up to the ferry and round over the rocks, but checked the radar and then cut the corner.

Outside lights down now, so settling in for the darts.

Off this week, so back to digging if the rain ever stops.

Happy new year fellow forumers.

This year starting off very much where last year left off. Grey and mucky.

No fear though. I leave the country next week and I have no doubt the following few weeks will bring glorious winter weather 🙃

Nice to start the year just as we left off with the sound of rain hitting the window. Did see a bit of sun earlier but not for long.

Out of the area (in fact the country) right now but good to see a sunny start to the new year at least, even though it sounded like it didn't last. Last time New Year's Day dawned sunny was 2019, though on that occasion the settled weather lasted all day.

Returning to the UK around mid-month so hope this upcoming cold and dry spell sticks around for a good few weeks. Looks like typical 2023 weather until Friday in the south (almost no sun, large quantities of rain, unseasonable temps) followed by an abrupt improvement at the weekend. Very, very similar to Jan 2001 which abruptly improved at almost exactly the same time, or Jan 1991 where the switch was on the 11th.

OT but I never get why kids go back to school so early these days.

In my day, return-to-school varied from Jan 6th in 1986 to as late as Jan 14th in 1980, and most years (all except 1986, IIRC) was after Twelfth Night. Famous weather-related memories include the snow on Jan 6 1985 falling one day before return-to-school.

We'd have rioted if they sent us back on Jan 2nd in the 80s! 😉

All part of this tedious part of modern UK culture which wants to end Christmas way too early.

Sounds quite October or November-ish back home. While January is often wet it tends to be of the steady moderate type; intense rainfall is more typical of the autumn months when SSTs are higher.

Anyway I'm glad I'm out of it. Here (northern Greece) it's calm and fair, "partly cloudy". It maxed around 12C but due to the very dry air felt a more like 6C. Very much less humid than when we get 12C close to the winter solstice at home! The stronger daylight gave it a very late-February-ish air. Zero rain since I arrived on the 27th though not sure what effect the UK pattern change will have on local conditions here.

Here's to that high and those northeasterlies persisting all month. And first half of Feb too (with a 2019 redux in the 2nd half...)

Can that wait until Jan 6th? A bit of Christmas cheer will brighten up what sounds like a very grim 4 days coming up. 🙂

Rich, I have similar thoughts to you:

Spring - Cool and long before it starts to warm up. (If the March SSW, does occur).

Summer - Record heat beating 2023 length a very dry summer.

Autumn - Average temps and rainfall.

Winter - Mild and Wet, a classic CC UK winter month.

Be interesting to see El Niño in neutral conditions, and it's possible duration

PHEW😬

No expert, but based on a mixture of typical contemporary trends and "what hasn't it done for a while"

Feb - mild, perhaps very mild, average rainfall, mix of stormy and fine/sunny. Originally I thought colder but it looks like we're getting our cold this month instead, which is better to be honest!

Spring - warmer than average, mostly dry with some cold and wet periods. Snow early in April even down here

Summer - typical for these days, fairly poor, June very poor, July dry but cloudy featuring brief 37C heat spike, August typically mixed

Autumn - dry with a warm Sep and cold Oct. Not sure about Nov, perhaps slightly mild and slightly wet but with a dry start to the month.

December - a drier than average one. Finally!
