Why not back to Southampton it's closer ...

Think the storm had already moved into Southampton.

lashing it down now in the test valley. For some reason, I wasn’t expecting such heavy rain. Probably wasn’t paying attention.

Rain has arrived now and winds will peak in 2-3 hours and remain high until midnight

Hi Jo, do you think going by the gfs 12 the strongest core of winds have shifted south?

THe fine detail on the UKV doesn't suggest that and paints a different pciture to what you might see on the GFS. For England it will be the strong gusts along the Cold front which will be lively tonight

Either there's a delay in this system, or wind speeds are not as strong as forecast for down here..

UKV 12z has it peaking from 8-10PM in Central South and South East regions, Amber warning doesn't come into effect until 6PM.

I think wind speeds have reduced a fair bit for inland central / southern England, 5-8mph. I know this is an unpopular statement however if you compare the last few icon wrf harmonie charts it's quite clear. Still talking 55-65mph for a short time with 70mph locally in squalls.

Wind speeds really ramped up in last 15 mins (imby).

Yeah, some powerful sustained gusts.

The UKV also suggests that it should be gusting to 55mph now, but we're a long way from that!

I really don't think 5 mph is either here or there!  Its like saying that the predictions for 100mms of rain and been downgraded to 95 mms, in situations like this models give us a jist of the expected gusts ,irrelevant really as the storm still is intensifying. .......

Not if you look at it this way. 55mph typical for inland areas vs 70mph had it further upgraded. The differences are noteable when comparing output from 24 hours ago.

For those of us in Scotland, it is beginning to howl and I'd imagine those who are in for the night, will be pleased.

The amber warnings run 18z til 06Z but the northern one has moved from Medium likelihood of medium impacts

to now include a low likelihood (within the marked area) of seeing HIGH impacts too.

these are outlined on the Met Office website

What are your thoughts for the south coast? I was thinking 50 mph early evening, perhaps scraping 70mph at the peak later in the evening at Portland/St Catherine's Point?
