Another dull damp day. Climate extremes are very real to farmers. Watching  my estate today carting tonnes of soil back up a tattie field from last year which was washed down some bad gully erosion channels into the big ditch at the bottom . Breaking up tattie fields just after harvest may be made compulsory in terms of cross compliance if the head of SEPA gets his way .I have to say I agree with him.

In the interests of balance found this very interesting from The Independant especially when we are being asked to do carbon audits and a lot of the time we are found to be recycling carbon and not creating more as farmers.

Fancy a quick flight to Barcelona, but worried about your carbon footprint? No problem. Despite aviation being responsible for between two and three per cent of all carbon emissions, many airlines are claiming that...

Absolutely glorious here today - warm slightly hazy but unbroken sunshine and barely a breath of wind. Was expecting the warmth but the forecasts suggest it should be much windier.

It was windy earlier when I was up the hill walking the dog, but yes, it's died down and very pleasant out now. Pity it's like a winter cold spell, looking like a 2 or 3 day warm up at best before cooling off again next week.

Bright spells earlier but cloudy now. 16.5C max which without checking may be my warmest of the year so far. Defo warmest in April.

Very pleasant both in St Andrews and back home in Glenrothes today. 17c the max. Air felt soft and warm. However rain on again this evening.

Finally a day worthy of spring, and the warmest here so far this year with a max of 17c.

Sunshine, at best, hazy during the afternoon but feeling very pleasant indeed.

Clearing a bit this evening with a lovely sunset - first evening you could walk around in a fleece rather than the triple layer winter garb.

First bats of the year out as well, nature finally shaking off its winter torpor.

Glorious again today, bit more of a breeze but the haze from yesterday is gone so still lovely.

Incredibly dull overcast day. Almost dark out there. Beyond a joke now.

Fine drying day again very windy and 16c maximum  ground surface  looking very dry. Tractors going into fields however finding soft wet spots especially in low lying areas with high water tables near the sea and rivers.  Farming community under a lot of stress with the worst for anyone lambing or calving outside in the last few weeks  Just odd fields being sown round about today mainly sandy south facing ones on gentle slopes.

Northernlights I find it crazy to read you say the surface is looking dry.

More very heavy rain today, about 10mm so approximately 110mm for the month so far. I have not known the ground this wet in almost mid april ever.

SW Saltire  SW Saltire  Never seen it like this before but surface conditions very deceptive plenty of tales today of machines sinking suddenly inapparently dry looking  fields and then having to leave large  areas to  dry out more before attempting sowing again .My own contractor was nagging me to go today but patience is needed. Must be down to excessive rainfall totals from last October till now. Sower arrived this evening ready for early start tomorrow as no one else would go today  with high water tables being blamed in lower Moray just above sea level Thankfully we are on a hill and the water flows away from us.

Only 59.7mm so far here for April, according to amateur station along the road (so accuracy may be questionable). Rather decent day for the most part, with a sunny high of 16.7C just edging out yesterday for the warmest day of the year so far. Very breezy though, great for drying sheets and towels, may even have a run across the grass with the mower tomorrow. It's not exactly desperate for a cut, just taking chances when I get them.

Ravelin Sepa have 69mm recorded at Westhill and 51mm at Inverurie so far for April. Just shows the difference a few miles and elevation make to totals, Aberdeen is at 73mm the easterly component in the early April winds really showing up.

Plenty of sunshine but very stormy SW winds blowing over the bins and trying to launch the trampoline (just as well the ground anchors are there).

14c currently so cooler than yesterday, looks like shower of rain over to the west.

Rain hammering down and bouncing off the pavement, wind howling and roaring in the trees behind the house.  Ahhh the joys of springtime in Scotland 👿

After another warmish, sunny day albeit with some pretty strong winds a heavy band of rain just passed over. The car temperature display is now showing 4 degrees!

Haven't posted in a while. Been busy at work & home. Can't believe we are already half way through April!

I'm used to being disappointed with winters but this spring can only be descrided as disgusting.🤢

Have managed to Goldilocks around the country a bit in the last few weeks.

Largs in late March. It was wild wind wise. Millport ferry in the background.

Aberfeldy for my first bike ride of the year on Easter Sunday. Walked up the Birks to the stunning waterfall.

Anstruther for a gig at Bread & Butter cafe on the 4th of April.

Florence enjoying the vista this evening.

Fingers crossed for a great summer!

Some sharp showers this afternoon with hail took the temperature down to 5c by early evening Wintry sunset with clear arctic air and snowy looking shower  clouds over the hills. Sower rained off at 6.00pm but windy and dry again so hopefully get going in the morning.

We're at 135mm of rain so far for April at the nearest sepa station and 631mm for the year so far! Attempted to do some gardening between the downpours today and nearly lost my welly in the bog making some flower beds... Similar to others with some of the downpours containing hail  with a quick cool down. Some more heavy showers tomorrow and Monday before a drier day again.

  • April 2024 - Was it that cold overall? A look at the statistics

General perception from many is that April was a cold month, but statistics would suggest otherwise, with the average temperature for the whole month coming in just above the 30 year average for the UK as a whole. A warm first half to to the month averaged out the cold second half. View the full blog here
