  1. Some people are interested in weather watching perhaps?
  2. Been away from the form all day...this talk of a Polar low......have the met office mentioned it
  3. At the moment nothing, a nice snow shower earlier, but the last couple of showers have been sleet at best. Temp is on the way up, unless there is a drop in temp expected, sleet is probbly the best we can hope for today. It just hasnt been cold enough here.
  4. Turn to rain pretty quick in Preston, you havent missed much here.
  5. That shower that came in over Blackpool just came almost directly over here, wind really picked up, sound of hail on the window, by the time I got up to see.....rain....possibly a tiny bit sleety...but mainly rain...
  6. Not in Preston, but I could see we just missed something on the radar
  7. You may well be right (its more often than not the case for us westies) ....but its early yet wait until tonight
  8. ...but he aint from round these parts......this is a local thread for local people, there is nothing for him here! Only kidding of course, everyones welcome for me.
  9. Perfectly legitimate post that...... Im probably one of the ones who has moaned about the reference to weather apps and can see how that may come across as a bit snobby...... but its not meant to be, its just trying to explain that there are far better ways to see if snow is coming than a weather app..... its meant to be helpful, but I can see how it comes across as cocky.
  10. Same here, Im 36, (up to 18 in Liverpool 18- 36 in Preston) I dont think Ive ever seen more than 4 - 5 inches of snow, Ive said this before and people dont believe it. My farther in law is 76, he thought the snow in 2010 (which although the cold spell was superb was actually only 4 inches at the very most) was the most snow he had ever seen in Preston...he may be forgetting a time or two (and he spent 8 or 9 years away from Preston)...but it highlights how unusual deep snow is here....possibly a once in a lifetime event. Thats why i TRY to not get to disappointed when it doesnt snow...its like being disappointed when its not warm in Siberia.
  11. I think its more that, so far it looks like more of a northern event. BTW thats not a chip on the northern shoulder comment, there is a a bigger population down south so, the model thread is naturally busier when the south appears to be the focus of anything interesting.
  12. I was in Australia in 2004, did Preston get snow?
  13. It does look good, if I lived further from the coast Id be getting very interested. For Fylde Coast, though, ive read the words 'away from the coast' and marginal' in too many of the forecasts to be hopeful.
  14. The wording of the warnings has changed, that is much more significant than anything a weather app will tell you
  15. Apparantly its a bit sleety in Wales, surely that doesnt bode well?
  16. Thats a big upgrade on the polar bear output, my polar bears are looking down, but I think the polar bears may be computer generated too, so no more useful than the apps, or the graphics.
  17. Im not sure (I could be wrong) that those graphics are any better than weather apps. I'd bet they are computer generated, there is no forecaster input to them, so if they upgrade or downgrade its irrelevant really. The best guide now is to watch the radar, hope its gets to you and see what other people get as its over them.
  18. Yes that was the bit that got me interested too (no mention of sleet, snow or wintry mixes anywhere).......but for us Preston, leyland etc, its touch and go whether we are too far north...that would be a real killer, it not being marginal but not getting to us.
  19. Some times unexpected things happen, maybe this will be one... but it would be unexpected, I think most of the excitement about the event is because the models originally showed it as as a major one, but even as early as last Thursday they were backing off. The meto warning matrix has low probability, the media arent getting exited and the charts currently dont look spectacular. Hopefully some will get slow, but I hope we avoid the usual, meto, models, bbc, model thread bashing if we dont because for days they havent really bought it. And as has been said lots of times, obsessing over a weather app is fairly pointless, the worst are gimmicks that give same weather for a huge area and hardly ever update, the best update regularly and are useful for average joe to use to see if its likely to be rainy tomorrow, they are not designed for weather enthusiasts to use to predict snow in a very marginal uncertain situation. Does anyone really think Accuweather have access to info the meto dont, or that they have an army of forecasters pouring over the charts and making predictions for every tiny location?
  20. I think it could sing back for lots of the region.....but for you and me in Preston...........we both know thats pretty unlikely....still some is better than no hope????
  21. 2010 was superb, in all honesty probably a once or twice in a lifetime event for our part of the world.
  22. Horrible weather Id say, thats the thing with marginal, if youre on the wrong side of it its really nasty 'unusable' weather. I think its inevitable next week will be a miss for us near the coast too. With very few exceptions we need it to be really cold for us to get lucky, I dont see any really cold weather on the way.
  23. Wintry mix here, which bodes well for further inland areas. Temp would have to drop alot for here though
  24. Thats a good plan, I think thats the only way to look at living where we do, to get upset about it is like living in the desert and being surprised it doesnt rain more.
  25. 'utterly pathetic performance' .....? a bit harsh, they are the best tool with have, the reason they struggle with this country is we are tiny island with a huge land mass to the east and an ocean to the west, thats way harder to predict than the weather for say the U.S. People need to the view the models for what they are, they offer a RANGE of possibilities, why do you think the METO output does not always match their model output.
