  1. -4.7 last night, coldest since 16th Jan. No fog this morning been a lovely sunny day. Felt pretty cold though.
  2. It's alright, I think they just got confused and put low instead of high in that last sentence
  3. Hopefully they'll remove the words a small but and replace them with an and add significantly in front of colder.
  4. Last sentence of the extended outlook is interesting. "Temperatures overall will be above normal, with a small but increasing chance of colder conditions as we move through the period." First hints of the effects of a possible SSW perhaps?
  5. In disappointment I imagine. I'm loosing track, it's gonna happen, it's not going to happen. It will give us cold and snow, it won't give us cold and snow.
  6. I reckon we do better from easterlies but you'd do better from northerlies, north westerlies. An average snowfall around here would be 3 to 4 inches. Less often 6 inches or so, Jan/Feb 1979, December and Jan 81/82, December 2010, Feb 2012, Feb/March 2018. And very occasionally 1ft plus Jan 1987 and Feb 1991 (I was living in North East London at the time).
  7. I think you are right. Even during the 80's, which are famed for their cold and snowy winters, there are some non-memorable ones. 1979/80 - don't remember this at all not sure there was any snow down this way. 1980/81 - see above. 1981/82 - several decent snowfalls in December then a proper blizzard in Jan. 1982/83 - one snowfall in Feb. Not a big fall and I remember being really disappointed compared to the previous winter. 1983/84 - the fabled cold zonality but it was pants down here. One wet snowfall in Jan which just about lasted the day. 1984/85 - a good one with a cold and snowy spell in Jan and Feb. 1985/86 - a long freezing spell in Feb but not much snow until the breakdown in early March. 1986/87 - a generally cold January with an amazing cold and snowy spell early on. and that was it. 87/88, 88/89 and 89/90 were all mild and snowless. So I think this winter hasn't been too bad. Two cold spells and a decent snowfall in December. Still plenty of time for another cold and snowy spell with talk of an SSW. If that does happen then it's up there with 2017/18, but even now I still think it's been a decent winter. It may have been different in other parts of the country but that's how I see it down here.
  8. Seems a bit OTT to me. Reading the text it even says temperatures will be near normal during the day and it will be sunny. So it's basically for a couple of nights of frost.
  9. Not the update I was hoping for but at least they still mention the possibility. "There is a small and possibly diminishing chance of much colder conditions for a time across the south." Updated: 14:00 (UTC) on Thu 2 Feb 2023
  10. I would wait until it's updated at about 3 this afternoon see if they change the wording at all. It probably won't change today with the GFS still going for it but if it changes its tune tonight it will probably be dropped tomorrow. Or if the other models move towards the GFS they might even change the wording from small to increasing chance. You never know...
  11. Cold wave in parts of Japan and the Korean peninsula now after the record cold in China. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/jan/25/japan-and-north-korea-sound-warning-as-deadly-cold-snap-sweeps-across-asia
  12. The GFS mean for London is, pretty much, below average from 26th to the end. Not excessively cold but cold none the less.
  13. No frost this morning, too much cloud. In fact the temperature has been very slowly rising since yesterday morning and has now reached 2.4.
  14. -4.3 low last night. Just above freezing now at 0.4 but it's gone cloudy. I want my sunshine back.
  15. Just ventured into the MOD thread, wish I hadn't. It's like depressives anonymous in there. @alexisj9 I admire your efforts in there but some people are just determined to write off the rest of winter in mid January.
  16. A colder day today than the last couple maximum 1.8. A lovely sunny day but frost all day in the shade and plenty of ice around. North facing back garden frozen solid.
  17. Very thick frost again this morning but temperature only got down to -1.3. Looks like another sunny cold winter's day coming up.
  18. Only got down to -1.2 last night but was still very frosty making the roads and pavements very slippery again. Reached the dizzy heights of 3 this afternoon, warmest it's been since Monday. Falling slowly down to 2 now. Another glorious sunny crisp winters day.
  19. Temp still seems to be dropping. It was -2.8 at 6:45 now down to -4.1. Very thick hoar frost on pavements and roads. Looks lovely but a bit slippery.
