  1. Two reasons come to mind, but I'm sure there are others as well: 1) There isn't much of a cold pool to tap into at present, i.e. upper air temps may not be quite cold enough for snow, at least initially. Worth bearing in mind that it isn't quite winter yet. 2) As Gibby mentions in his excellent summary (above), there is a reasonable chance that a HP system will position itself over or very near the UK. HP = dry, frosty & cold. Bish
  2. That video of the football stadium being hit is extraordinary. The cameraman did very well to hold his nerve, and not even swear aloud - I would have been hiding in the toilet! Bish
  3. Thanks for the great contribution MIA. Looks like you have very similar recollections as mine regarding things like tree damage. And of course, only a few weeks later we had the famous February 1991 easterly - indeed a classic winter for this area. Interestingly enough, despite all the snow from these two events, I don't think it was an especially cold winter CET-wise? Bish
  4. I was about to make the same point, beat me to it! Also, this time last week the strat was modestly warmer than average (as illustrated). I wonder how far below average the strat temp would have to drop before it becomes a factor - anyone? Bish
  5. If it's any comfort, that my interpretation of things as well! Far too early to start worrying about Strat temps too much. Bish
  6. Thanks for the great contribution Chio. As a matter of interest, how far below "average" levels would strat temps have to drop before VI becomes a significant factor? Bish
  7. Ugh, even the mere mention of the B*rtlett word makes me feel poorly You know how the Netweather forum filter mischievously substitutes certain words for others? Well I think "Bartlett High" should be included as well - I propose "raspberry blancmange" or something equally less traumatic on the eyes! Bish
  8. First frost of these season here as well. Temp dropped to -0.6c this morning. Bish
  9. The sensible ones haven't made their forecasts yet, and won't do for several more weeks. Bish
  10. I've just come across this wonderful picture taken the following morning by my brother, which demonstrates both the snow depth and also the tree damage which was so prevalent everywhere. Amazing how even the branches of the poplar trees in the distance are mangled and broken, purely because of the weight of the snow. You can also see what I meant about the 'unpeeled banana' effect regarding the nearby conifers. Bish
  11. Thank you, kind soul! Just about to upload a fantastic pic to the "Great Midlands Blizzard 9th December 1990" thread Bish
  12. I'm sure it's me being terribly thick, but for the life of me I just cannot work out how to post thumbnailed pictures within this forum - ironically the images in Weathermaster's post from Dec 2011 appear to be broken lol. Can anybody spare five minutes to explain the process? Bish
  13. The Scots must have been pretty brassed off that day - heavy rain & strong winds whilst the English were basking under the warm sun! Bish
  14. A few other words spring to mind as well John, but I doubt they'd get past the forum swear filter! Bish
  15. I just love this thread - I found it absolutely fascinating reading last winter, which was the first time I'd followed it properly. Thank you Chio and all of the other regular contributors for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us. Bish
  16. I was about to enquire what a raging hoolie is exactly, but on second thoughts............ Sun starting to peak through here in Solihull. Bish
  17. The rain has finally stopped here, for the time being anyway. 38.00mm today equals 52.75mm overall since midday yesterday -pretty impressive. Getting noticably gustier now. Bish
  18. I find that astonishing - just shows how unpredictable the weather can be. Chris K can't be too far away from your location, and is practically underwater by the sounds of things. Bish
  19. It's eased a bit now (thank goodness!), although judging by the rainfall radar the West Midlands is still set for at least another couple of hours of the heavier stuff. Bish
  20. Cold, dull, blustery, and lots of torrential rain - other than that it's a perfectly okay day! 31.75mm today so far (currently falling at a rate of 22.50mm per hour!), coupled with the 14.75mm from yesterday afternoon. Bish
  21. We've had 36mm of rain in the past 24hrs, most of which seems to have fallen after eight o'clock yesterday evening. Still belting it down here, and is forecast to do so for several hours more I believe. Bish
  22. No T&S here today, but several hours of very heavy rain between 08:00 to 13:00. Ironically the day ended sunny, although very windy. Bish
  23. Nice storm just over an hour ago, although I think the worst of it passed to our north. Looks like a rinse 'n repeat coming up - once again the sun is out, really ramping up the temperature, however out to the west another dark cloud is slowly appearing on the horizon. I have to say, the welsh borders region has done a sterling "breeding & feeding" job for us west midlanders today! Bish
