  1. In short - the Gulf Stream. Remember that we're a relatively small island surrounded by a mass of water.
  2. Now let's no get carried away folks - best not to take too much notice of anything past 72 hours, you know it often ends in tears. Still, overall things are looking good and, as has been often stated, the overall pattern is very good. Keep your eye on posts by John Holmes, chionomaniac, Steve Murr, Glacier Point, nick sussex and the like and you won't go far wrong.
  3. Hopefully you (and others) won't have wasted any time at all - hopefully you will have learned something from the experts that also post here.
  4. That really depends which model you follow doesn't it Ian.
  5. Looks to me that the atlantic low is going to stall and maybe undercut .......... keep watching .........
  6. Would you care to explain the reasoning behind your thoughts? Such short comments aren't useful to anyone.
  7. I've been following this potential cold snap for the past few weeks and I'm not aware of the cold spell being pushed back at all (which is pretty unusual in itself). Unless anyone knows otherwise?
  8. I admire your enthusiasm but calm down Andy, it hasn't happened yet. Also, if we get an easterly or north easterly flow then most of Wales won't see huge amounts of snow (East Wales being a little better off). However, it will be cold and, if we get a channel low (once some suitably cold air is established), then we may be in business. Having said all that, you are in one of the best locations in Wales for snow.
  9. I was just about to mention that - the caption underneath the video says: "The Met Office says that up to 60mm (5in) of rain could fall on already saturated ground in Somerset" I'm sure they meant 60mm, which of course is just over 2 inches (which is more than enough!).
  10. Agreed. I rarely post here but this has to be said: I find the model threads incredibly tiresome during the winter months, but i still read them for the few good, unbiased and informative posts that crop up - even when the models are showing some great synoptics there are always a number of people who will whine and gripe like a bunch of grizzling babies and pick holes in every single run. No doubt some are trolling, some are ignorant (in which case, don't comment!) and some are simply incredibly negative people who will NEVER be satisfied ("the snow is only 12 inches deep - wahhh!", "The temperature is only going down to -10C tonight - wahhh", "It's only going to be cold for a week - wahhh". Etc. This grizzling by a relatively small number of people completely ruins the model threads. Enough said.
  11. As has been said a number of times - let the cool/cold pattern establish itself and wait a few days. The real cold will come.
  12. Get the high in place first, THEN 'worry' about the 'warmth' of Europe. Remember that it cools down fast under the right conditions.
  13. I think that Sir should be posting in the "I hate winter" thread.
  14. I keep seeing people say this, but it doesn't matter if the easterly is allowed to establish itself - get the easterly first and the cold will filter through to Europe then the UK within a few days.
  15. It's called 'freedom of the press' - roughly translated, that means: 'freedom to print any old nonsense that they care to make up and/or sensationalise and sell to the gullible fools that inhabit the UK'
  16. Pardon me for speaking up, but there's a hell of a lot of ill-informed and presumptive load of old cobblers being posted here today, including the usual "winter is over" nonsense. Sorry, a tad off-topic, but it riles me when generalised utter nonsense is posted here. I'll crawl back into my cave now.
  17. Slightly OT, but are there any online videos of the BBC weather forecasts before and during the February 18th/19th 1978 blizzard in the south west and south Wales? I can't seem to find any on YouTube, no doubt due to VCRs not being as common in households then. Ta.
  18. The chasers are back: http://www.ustream.t.../chasercam-live Edit: Just video but no sound at the moment, but there was sound a few minutes ago. Edit2: Sound is now back
  19. Some of Sandy's snow: http://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/sandy-lets-it-snow/844514 http://www.skitheeast.net/posts/id/172492836/10-webcams-in-appalachia-for-sandy-snow
  20. Chasers in the eye: http://www.ustream.t.../chasercam-live Edit: Now out of it.
