  1. Indeed it will. It seems that a few years earlier, Hurricane Debbie was a similar type storm where it is unclear whether it got to Ireland before becoming extratropical, and this storm was also moving very fast. I guess it depends if you class a hurricane as tropical until extratropical transition is finished, or stop classing it as a hurricane when the extratropical transition starts. There's not much doubt that both of these storms had probably started transition, but it is still quite remarkable how it could be classed as a category two hurricane up to the Faroe Islands.
  2. Thankyou both for your help. That helps to understand some of it, but I'm still curious how unlike Katia, it was able to have sustained windspeeds of a category two hurricane over cool waters. I guess it is quite possible that since it was such a long time ago, it may have already turned extratropical, or not have been as strong as the image shows due to bad forecasts and the technology not being as good as it needed to be?
  3. Could someone with more knowledge than me on the subject please explain to me how Hurricane Faith was able to avoid becoming extratropical, and still be classed as a category 2 hurricane at such high latitudes? From what I can find it became extratropical at around 62N, and had category 1/2 windspeeds near the UK, which seems almost impossible with the sea temperatures you would expect in that region.
  4. Latest update on 92L from the NHC: "SATELLITE IMAGES AND SURFACE OBSERVATIONS INDICATE THAT THE WEATHERDISTURBANCE IN THE EXTREME NORTHWESTERN CARIBBEAN SEA HAS BECOMELESS ORGANIZED OVERNIGHT WITH MOST OF THE SHOWER ACTIVITY NOWMOVING OVER THE YUCATAN PENINSULA AND BELIZE. DEVELOPMENT OF THISSYSTEM BEFORE IT MOVES OVER LAND HAS BECOME LESS LIKELY...HOWEVERTHERE IS STILL POTENTIAL FOR DEVELOPMENT ONCE THE DISTURBANCE MOVESOVER THE GULF OF MEXICO"
  5. Tropical Depression 05 L is now Tropical Storm Erin, the 5th named storm of the season with windspeeds of 40mph and pressure at 1006mb. Intensification looks likely over the next couple of days, but it doesn't currently look like it will get to hurricane status before starting to weaken as conditions become less favourable for developmennt.
  6. Very dark sky right now! It actually looks like it is rotating from here, but I would think that that is very unlikely. It seems very strange, but no rain as of yet.
  7. Very black sky associated with this squall. It looks like it's actually rotating, but I'm not sure.
  8. Lots of showers still developing over the SW, looks like this afternoon will be very interesting for quite a lot of us
  9. Rain is picking up here, despite the storm being south of here. I'm quite sure there is some small hail mixed in with it too.
  10. Wow, in the last 15 minutes those storms have really intensified!
  11. Looking at the radar, it looks like we could be in for a little bit of action. The Blitzortung lightning map showing a few sferics popping up here and there. Oh my, in the past two weeks we've had more storms here than in the past 5 years.
  12. Kudos to you AWD, your post last night looks to be spot on. Any idea on how much you think the squall will intensify? Temps got up to about 22C here today, and still felt rather warm in the sunshine. Monday's looking pretty wet at the moment aswell:
  13. Congrats on 1000 Local weather station is saying 30.3C was the peak today, which is a little hotter than I was expecting, but it sure does feel that hot out.
  14. Rainfall for July was 75.2mm, which is 24.5% above the average of 60.4mm for the month. Over 2/3rds of Juy's rain here came from the two thuderstorms that brought torrential downpours. Total rain for year for the first 7 months of the year is 386.0mm, when the average for the first 7 months should be 396.1mm, meaning there has been 2.55% less rainfall so far this year than there should have been.
  15. Hot and sunny here, and feeling very very hot. Currently 27.4C out, with a DP of 20.5C
  16. Absolutely fantastic here. A couple of weeks of hot, sunny weather, where we saw our highest temperature since 2006, and then followed by a thundery breakdown, which contained some of the loudest thunder I've heard in a while. If that wasn't enough, just a few days ago saw a storm with the heaviest rainfall I've seen in my entire life - So heavy that it broke the weather stations rainfall intensity reading. Hopefully August will be just as eventful!
  17. Great post AWD, I always look forward to your input. Been relatively cloudy all day here, but when the cloud broke, temperatures got up to around 22C. It will be nice to see some sun again tomorrow.
  18. It will be nice to get 30C again - After 2 weeks of high temperatures, I was startting to actually get used to it and enjoy it. Is this thread just for August the 1st and 2nd? If not, then the GFS seems to want the heat to rebuild, and by the 6th, temperatures look widely in the low 30's
  19. http://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/news/10578866.Chaos_engulfs_Swindon_as_weather_turns_nasty/ A couple more pictures of the flooding that the rain caused here in Swindon yesterday, from the Swindon Advertiser. Although the road in the first picture is prone to flooding, the road in the second picture didn't even flood during the floods in July 2007. Haven't had much rain this morning though, and the sun is shining now. Temperature is 19.3C
  20. I'm hoping you're right mate, I've been trying to figure out if it will hit us or just go slightly north of us. Let's just hope we get some more action
  21. That storm near Bristol looks quite the cracker. Still raining here, although it is only light. Most of the roads have cleared/been cleared by the council now, but I'm not ruling out seeing something else before they day is over.
  22. The weather station here: Surely this can't be right? I know it feels like it was about that, but that would be unbelievable!
  23. Yeah, I think you're right. This is the first time I've seen it flood since the new drainage system was done a few years ago, though.
