Absolutely lovely winter day - just wish I was walking the dog rather than at work!

As suggested in the story this is not a triple rainbow - it should be three concentric rings. This looks more like a reflection for the 'third' rainbow (not sure in what) of the other side.

Snowed at the Uni for about 5 mins

Genuinely don't know what to do! What is this stuff coming from the sky! I know it's only Aug 16th but with the switch away from the long dry hot weather to more normal summer it almost feels like autumn has come... The wife will want the heating on soon!

I got back to Warminster around 4 ish and it was mostly dry until the outskirts. Driving into the middle I couldn't believe how wet it was. I go soaked going 2 m from car to door, and the dog did not want to go out. Oddly quite a lot of the lawns in town are still very dry - I suspect an awful lot of the rain ran straight off. My allotment did get a good drink though, so I've finally been able to ease off on the watering!

Lovely to actually feel 'a bit cold' last night walking the dog...

My allotment is desperate for a good drop of rain, so I'm hoping for later today...

So shorts on in the office today after checking the BBC - cloud will be gone by 9.00 am... Still not gone yet! I think it's finally starting to make it!

Slightly alarmed this morning by a bright glowing thing in the east...

Steady - lets not get carried away! My father refers to 'Warminster Dress', which is wearing shorts, usually with jumpers and hats, at all times of the year. I nearly reached for the shorts yesterday!

Having spent 4 hours in the allotment/garden yesterday, just a week on from 6 inches of snow on the ground, I'm completely into spring mode now (plus a cricket meeting tonight too!). No-one loves snow more than me, and I was surprised by how cold and snowy both March spells were for us, with the lead up to and then thurs and fri of Beast One among the best ever snow memories I've got. That said, the sun is shining, the clocks have changed and roll on evening walks, and sitting on my garden wall as the sun goes down.

Watched one over the allotments in Warminster yesterday around lunchtime. The A36 valley is a bit of a hot spot for them too,

I saw that too. Really rubbish graphics then - totally indistinguishable from snow showers. And don't get me started on cloud vs sunny. After the previous change (tilted UK so Scotland looked tiny) they responded pretty quickly and made the angle less severe. Any chance they might respond to this?

Not sure when it came down (#crucial - is today another day of snow?). Yes - I did enjoy seeing that. Some good drifts in the same places as two weeks ago on the way to Bath. I saw some forming out on a walk yesterday morning, so if it had stayed colder longer could have been good, Cannot complain though - three weeks ago, spring was round the corner, little settled snow imby, another winter done and then...

It's been run before in snow. The runners will be fine - the issue will be marshals and first aid, but I'd be amazed if it didn't go ahead. A similar race in Wilts was called off in 2009, but only because the first aid couldn't get on course - the organisers would have happily had the race run in the snow!

It'll always be subjective (places not that far from me had several proper falls of snow before the Beast, whereas I only had snow falling, with very little accumulation. I have to say that all I've ever wanted is a spell like the 1st Beast, once a year. If that was guaranteed, I'd be a happy weather watcher. That its been 5 years since the most recent decent fall makes this a special winter that I'll recall fondly along with 2009, 2010 (twice) and 2013.

I think this is more applicable in blocked situations, with the prevailing westerly regime trying to push across the UK from west to east and displacing continental cold air. In the past there have been repeated occasions of expected returns to westerlies and warmth that have not occurred (or sometimes only partially).

Looks to be heading a lot colder again (sat and sun, possibly longer). Very cold is def possible, albeit not quite as potent as at the start of the month. As ever with snow - once there is cold air in play snow can pop up (as seen two weeks ago - the models don't do a good job at predicting snow at anything more than 48 hours away). Most remarkable feature is the date - very cold for the time of year.

Was over Mendip way yesterday (Cheddar, Charterhouse, Priddy). Some very big drifts still in evidence, including some along the route of the 'big cheese' race. At one point it went down a road with two feet of snow still across it! Absolutely incredible. I've heard people say that lingering snow is 'waiting for more' - would be incredible if we did get the Beast 2 and there was still snow from 3 weeks ago on the ground, albeit from very selected locations.

Thing is its a cyclic thing. More posts, more to read, people will look in more. Nothing going on, the equivalent of a post coital cigarette all round, we're all a bit drowsy and thinking about how good it was... In truth I'm very much enjoying lighter evenings, the chance to do stuff outside after work and thinking about getting on the allotment. It was a hell of a good ride though! Probably for me a perfect cold spell - lead up well modelled, including the obligatory wobble, then cold arrives, snow flurries, other areas seeing big falls before final we get our turn. The only poor point was the very rapid return to normal with a quick thaw - would have like the ice days for sat and sun then back to normal to be perfect...
