  1. I had ice on the car a few weeks ago, not sure whether that should count as a frost... Nice this morning, especially as I was given a lift to work and so didn't have to defrost my own car...
  2. Had to scrape the car this morning (3 degrees, but ide had formed...) Gorgeous day for a day off - shame I'm still at work!
  3. Is it me or is it ghastly humid out there? Keep having to pop out for 5 min walks between two buildings and come back dripping with sweat...
  4. Can report hail at first then sleet in the heavy shower that just passed Bath Uni...
  5. I'd agree - it's not feeling nice today! Pretty cold in the wind at the Uni in Bath
  6. Wife reports its been a lovely day, I can report looking out the window on a lovely day!
  7. Indeed - always nice to see the sun and the nights are drawing out too.
  8. OK, I know it's not the end of winter (although it may well feel like spring later this week). I just want to say that personally its not been too bad a winter. I would love a repeat of Dec 2010, or Jan 2013 etc etc but at least I have seen snow falling on four days (in two spells) and had settled snow (ok not much, but def there) on two mornings. We have also had a lot of epic frosts (down to - 8 deg C) which has meant a lot of car scrapping. I am a long time resident of west wilts and I remember many years pre internet watching the farming forecast, desperate for a hint of snow. My recollection is probably shaky but in the years I recall with some accuracy, from 1985 onwards, I would say a typical wilts winter was not that snowy. I think too many people have unrealistic expectations and tbh false memories if they think winters now are 'modern' or some such. Surely the recent colder ones (2008-2013) should knock that one on the head?
  9. Managed to make it into work through the treacherous conditions... Definitely saw at least one flake, so that counts right?
  10. Welcome! I must apologise for doubting until I looked on the radar and there it was - a nice little shower over reading, all on its own! Do you have one of those snow making machines running?
  11. TBH as ever there is still time for things to changes. It's very likely now that we will have an easterly of some sort and looking good for some very cold air (static cold pool?) Whether that will lead to the holy grail for many on here in winter of snow (the more the better) is not clear or realistically possible to say. From memory (which I'll admit is rubbish in my case) I am a bit biased against easterlies as in my youth they always seemed to give oodles of snow for the east (and south-east) but were just cold and dry in poor old Wiltshire. I recall one winter driving from a snowless wilts to Lewes and watching as the snow levels got higher and higher. Jealous and the drive back was worse in a way - watching the snow levels get less...
  12. Another morning scraping the car - only -1.7 on the thermometer but the ice was a particularly hard to clear variety... The week ahead looks interesting. I've steered clear of mentioning the potential to anyone - almost don't want to jinx things (I know that the weather will be what it will be but it does sometimes feel like we can affect it!). I guess the key for us in the west is how much precipitation we can get. As ever that won't be clear until closer to the time, so looking at the charts for the weekend is a bit pointless. I remember the spell from 8 years ago - seem to recall it snowing every day for 5 or 6 days and gradually accumulating a decent amount. Bath Uni shut on the thurs and friday (at 8.00 on the thurs, and oddly later on the friday, even though there was more snow) so too sort of snow days too. I reckon there was around 8 inches on the campus by the friday.
  13. This will almost certainly get deleted and fair enough, but just because there hasn't been a snowfest, this WINTER cannot be denigrated as a long autumn, unless you are volunteering to scrape the ice from my windscreen when its -8 deg C? In my location we've had more frosts than I can count, including several that have lasted all days in sheltered spots. We are clearly entering a period where the atlantic weather will edge a few hundred miles further east - it doesn't look like a return to classic zonality. With the SSW (or near SSW) in play it seems likely the the dice are being thrown and this may start to show in the later stages of the models fairly soon. And its not even Feb yet.
  14. It was very apparent driving towards Bath from Warminster. Nice to be on the cloudless side!
  15. I saw that as I drove off to work but didn't have a camera. There was another photo op about 5 mins later with a load of trails crossing and brightly lit. Looks like being a nice crisp Jan day today.
  16. I'm wondering if this is the same day that I was picked up from school in Salisbury by my mother at lunchtime? Now idea what day of the week unfortunately!
  17. I thought the same thing when I popped out for lunch. Still have some vestiges of snow in the (sheltered from the sun) courtyard, but not for much longer. Eyes down for next week I guess. I have found it odd with references to 1987 (e.g. on the weather last night) as I don't recall this one much. I can only assume it was not a snow event for Wilts (where I was at the time) and so I don't remember it. I spent some time (too much time!) last night trying to remember the big snow events from my Wiltshire childhood. I know that we had some epic snow in the winter of 78-79 as we were unable to leave the village (Shrewton) because of drifted snow. I also recall a walk with epic icicles hanging from buildings. There is another occasion on a sunday with very cold air and a front moving in giving a large snowfall that then turned to rain after a few hours and washed it all away. Probably 81 or 82? I remember a friday in my first year at secondary school with epic amounts of snow, winter of 84-85. I also recall a couple of other times in the 80's when there was a decent fall of snow, but can't pin it down. Anyone with a better memory shed any light on these? I'd quite like to revisit the charts for those events.
  18. Best fall since Jan 2013 (which isn't saying much) but very happy to see it and to walk out to my lift in light snow, with snow on the ground.
  19. Hi Fromey - I'm at the Uni - not really seen much yet but still hoping!
  20. For what it's worth I suspect many of us will see flakes falling later this afternoon and early evening, but I can't see much settling for our areas (talking Wiltshire and the west). I do think however that some of us could see some settled snow overnight from the showers. Not easy to predict those, just need to hope really...
  21. Yep - this is the uncertainty that the lovely Carol hinted a this morning. I do still find it fascinating that we are really close to this event but honestly don't know what the outcome will be. Makes me laugh when people comment on fine detail of D10 charts...
  22. I've said above - someone WILL see snow from this, but it's unlikely to be much and probably won't be disruptive... Just hope its me!
  23. There was one back in Jan 2010 where Warminster was in the red warning area, but in the end the system took it about 40 miles to the East and Reading go buried. I was bitter, but that was tempered somewhat as I was on crutches and wouldn't have been able to enjoy it to the full... Fingers crossed for all!
