  1. Ouch that looks nasty in Perth. Here in the NE the rain also continues to come down and both the Dee and Don are causing real concern. For anyone that knows Aberdeen this was the formal gardens in Seaton Park an hour or so ago. It is a bit of a flood plain but rarely are these gardens inundated like this.
  2. There were quite a few people up by Torry Battery (at the entrance to Aberdeen Harbour) this afternoon, myself included, and it was pretty wild (see also below). The wind along the coast is pretty fierce today.
  3. Yes, not good news for this neck of the woods in coming days with an amber warning in force for three consecutive days (tomorrow until Monday) "A frontal zone arriving from the southwest late on Friday will become slow-moving across the area on Saturday and persist into Sunday, before being joined by another frontal zone from the southwest on Sunday night. Over the period to Monday some parts are likely to see over 200 mm of rain. The precipitation is expected to fall as snow initially above around 600 to 700 m. The snow level will rise on Sunday before returning to similar levels later Monday as the rain starts to ease. Given the saturated nature of the ground there is a greater risk of surface water and river flooding that might normally be expected." http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/warnings/#?tab=warnings&map=Warnings&zoom=5&lon=-3.50&lat=55.50&fcTime=1451692800&regionName=gr
  4. The Dee is really making its presence felt in parts of Aberden this evening with flooding reported and roads closed - I just hope the Bridge of Dee stays intact as the river is (remarkably) approaching the tops of the arches. Today's flooding up here has been very unusual for NE Scotland.
  5. I see that people are now big evacuated from parts of Aboyne too.
  6. Yes, it looks like the Ballater and Braemar areas have been badly hit by the rain (not that you'd know from watching the news!) https://www.eveningexpress.co.uk/fp/news/local/firefighters-carrying-evacuation-north-east-village2/
  7. Horribly windy and raining too here in Aberdeen. Certainly my least favourite weather - bring on the snow instead .
  8. I have to say that the next 48hrs or so in terms of both rain and winds look awful. The former for the SW and the latter more generally.
  9. LOL. It is the METAR (aviation weather report) for Aberdeen airport (EGPD) showing light freezing rain (-FZRA )at 10:20pm today (132220Z which is 22:20 "Zulu time" or UTC on the 13th)
  10. EGPD132220Z 36002KT 9999 -FZRA SCT018 BKN033 M00/M02 Q1016 TEMPO BKN014 Yes, looks like warm upper air involved.
  11. Yes the TrafficScotland website is not playing ball. I cannot get any cam images to load. The Braemar snow gates camera is back up and running now and showing that the snow has reached that part of the the A93 http://braemarscotland.co.uk/snowgate-webcam/
  12. Great photos. I miss my years of snowy Tyrone weather. I always thought it was my memory playing tricks on me but the stats and your posts do back up the perception that it can be quite a snowy part of the world.
  13. Apparently the Coledale High Bridge in Braithwaite has collapsed.
  14. Yes (see my edit above) both previous replies were posted when I was writing my post
  15. The flood defences to to which I refer are at a bend on the river not far from the town centre (rather than at Derwentwater). I've been down there a few times in the summer when the river has been at "normal" levels and struggle to picture the river at such a height that it could overtop the glass panels on the wall. I'm hoping it doesn't but with hours more rain I fear very bad news for Keswick and many of the towns in the Lakes. Edit: in the length of time it took me to write this it seems my post is now outdated as the defences have been beaten .
  16. Not good news to all and on the BBC a couple of locals from Keswick have stated that although the new glass panel flood defences are holding back the water, the river level may soon top them.
  17. Possibly more suited the N England thread but for info there is now a red warning out for parts of Cumbria http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/warnings/#?tab=warnings&map=Warnings&zoom=5&lon=-3.50&lat=55.50&fcTime=1449273600
  18. This looks pretty bad on the M90 too https://mobile.twitter.com/trafficscotland/status/673090391483240448 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-south-scotland-35014930 I wonder if anywhere will see a red warning from the MO
  19. Yes a thoroughly nasty day out there for many parts of Scotland (and N England). I think SS's advice about avoiding long journeys is very important. Between the Forth Bridge closure and the rain it looks like several main routes are badly affected. Meanwhile here in the Aberdeen it has been almost totally dry thanks to the mountain rain shadow effect. Stay safe people.
  20. Southern parts were anomalously wet whereas here in the NE it was actually drier than average http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/pub/data/weather/uk/climate/anomacts/2015/11/2015_11_Rainfall_Anomaly_1981-2010.gif It is certainly blowing hoodie here at the moment.
  21. Thundersnow? Without the snow... Shows up nicely on the sferics charts http://meteocentre.com/lightning/map_sfuk.php?date=0〈=en&data=czo0OiJBcmRzIjs=&type=strikes&size=standard&map=EuropeNW
  22. Part of the A90 was similar to that (around Stonehavn) about half an hour ago. One of those driving at warp speed type effects with the snowflakes in the headlights!
