  2. Yes I have a good recollection of that Afternoon / evening......28th January 2004 I was on the "Two" site I think and was discussing a small but heavy squall line that was moving south during the day. The temperature gradient to the fore was about 5c and fell to 0c within minutes of preciapitation starting. There was a lot of excitement on the website generated by the thought of seeing "Thundersnow", quite a rare phenomona. I was advising everyone in our office in croydon to leave early as it was due to "hit" around the 5pm rush hour. I was about to leave for home at 16:15 to visit my mother in a care home when I was called to a late meeting. I finished the meeting at around 16:45 , looked at the radar , saw it had intensified and was about 25 minutes away. Decided to leave and take short cut around the Biggin Hill / High Elms area to get out the M25 and over to Dartford...... the "event" hit as I got there.... Mother nature threw the kitchen sink at us ....Rain / Thunder and Lightening. The colours that the lightenening generated against the backdrop of blizzard conditions was something I had never witnessed before. Within a couple of minutes the rain had turned to Snow and the temperature had dropped to 0c. The intensity of Snow was amazing......small flakes/pellets and visibility down to about 30 yards at best. The wind caused a tree to collapse across the country lane basically blocking the route out and I was stuck along with dozens of other motorists. About 3 inches of snow fell in 30 minutes or so and then the skys cleared. I was then able ( along with many others ) to reverse out the lane back to the Croydon road ( A232 ) which by then was gridlocked. It took me 4 1/2 hours to complete my 50 minute journey home and I never got to the nursing home to see my mother after all. She passed away that night , bless her........thats the main reason why I'll always remember it .
  3. Teleconnections continue to improve from day 10...both AO & NAO starting to trend more negative http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/precip/CWlink/daily_ao_index/teleconnections.shtml
  4. Good.....it will help wash away all the corrosive salt that is spread across the roads and pavements.
  5. Wow....the Sandettie light vessel is now showing a temp of -3c from the middle of the English Channel http://www.xcweather.co.uk/ run the animated sequence for temperatures and you can see the blues filtering back into the SE
  6. Interesting..... 100% cloud cover all day. Temp got to 2.1 around 11:30am.....it's now dropping fast...currently 0.2c
  7. Just as an aside the Meto 16-30 day update has changed this morning and is looks more promising for this area....... There are large uncertainties at this forecast range, however indications are that colder than average conditions will become more likely across all parts of the UK. Northwestern parts of the UK may well see drier than average conditions on the whole. Southern and eastern parts of the UK could see average or even greater than average amounts of precipitation. This forecast would seem to indicate High pressure to the North West and North to North Easterly winds to the East and South. In colder than average conditions in Febrauary this could well mean significant snow. Maybe a sting in the tail of this winter yet ?
  8. Light radar activivty increasing in Thames Estuary. We had a short burst of "pellets" here 10 minutes ago. Temp 1.5c DP -1c Looks like intermittent radar failure is hiding what appears to a line of Snow showers heading down the Eastern Coastline directly to about Cliff then out West to around Dartford. Light snow now falling and temps lowered to 1.3C
  9. 7cm today. Temps now falling and any light thaw on car has now frozen. -0.4c. DP -1c Proper Winters day !
  10. Well the radar says no but I am still getting steady snow grains which have now covered cars, roofs and pavements again.temp now -0.2c and DP -1.3c
  11. a burst of snow grains here now ( bouncing off the roof tiles ).........didnt see this coming....laying as well which means that temps are falling again ( 0.5c )
  12. Slightly colder DP's moving into the SE now...this should stabilise the temps and any thaw in the next few hours. Expecting 2-7CM's here tomorrow from around 9am ( i'm about 58m asl ). HT Score ........Total yesterday was a commendable 1CM !! The ground around surrounding fields and hills here is rock solid ( which is gr8 after 6 months of Rain ) so tomorrows precipitation should lay instantly.
  13. Temp 0.3c and a little thaw starting here. The sky is darker than yesterday but nothing falling. Any chance of temps/850pha/dp's lowering today?
  14. 1 centimetre of powder snow here. Temp -1.4c .....at least we got something ...well done to those who got more in the West & South. We do much better here from convective snowfall........streamers etc.
  15. light snow, covering everything instantly ( 2 on the SMURR scale ).....-2c
  16. a few very light flakes here ( about 0.2 on the SMURR scale ). Temp -2c
  17. Under light cloud we have now gone sub zero again. Currently -0.4c
  18. The precipitation in the Estuary is predominantly Green ( Sleet ), how reliable is the NW weather type ?
