Zonal wind speed at 60’N increased to 28.6 at midnight. This was forecast and could indicate why NWP is showing such strength in the Jet stream. The good news is that this will fall like a stone from today to a possible reversal around the 28th. This should severely deflate energy in the jet stream around the New Year. The question is whether the models have factored this in?

The 06z Op shows a small improvement at T72 with better ridging to the NW and a defined contour bringing the aforesaid Easterly draw across southern areas on Xmas Eve. That should dry the ground out a bit following days of rain.
With the projected wind reversal still showing around 25th , i would ‘take a punt’ on future runs showing an increased number of colder scenarios around 3rd Jan as the downwelling progresses.

Been a thoroughly miserable wet/ damp day in the Thames Estuary. Rain on and off all day. Looks like a small depression developed and remains stationary over the area ( about 70 miles in diameter ). Rain today map shows it rotating nicely.

The heavier echoes are moving in a NW direction making landfall now in Lydd area. Following the same track would expect areas inside Canterbury to Rochester to be sweet spot this afternoon with only moderate bursts either side ( that's for Kent ).

Ashford and Canterbury should see Snow in next 15 minutes.

Thought I would advise anyone whose boilers have suddenly stopped it could be your outside pipe from the boiler has frozen up stopping the water from draining away. Pour hot water over it and it should free it up. Hopefully.
Still snow grains coming down here in Sidcup. Still -2.5c here.
Dozens of people reporting this with condensing boilers. Just locate the white pipe at the bottom of the boiler and follow it the outside, heat the pipe with warm water or hair driver and reset the boiler.
Ours stopped last night. We have British Gas emergency cover but were unable to contact them !!

Beeb London forecast just said 8/10 degrees by Sat/Sunday, is that likely, seems to go against everything I have read.
That’s probably based on the 0z runs this morning. Watch tomorrow night

have good view from loft ( crows nest ). Can see past Dartford Crossing into Canary Wharf and sky looks clear to the West. Looking North East towards Canvey it looks foggy so could be a sign of incoming shower. East looks cloudy but can see broken cloud towards Medway.
The "Fog" is a shower. Wind has got up too. 4 on SM Scale.

Hunt For Cold: Model Discussion - Heading Into Christmas

A couple of questions ..
Does anybody have historical knowledge of how quickly a raging jet stream deaccelerates when a SSW occurs?
And does the warming itself create inertia that slows it down, or does the Jet just “freewheel” until it loses its energy?
