One positive is at least the "all that heat is there in Spain for us to tap into" saying is being disproved. If anything a set up that produces extreme heat in Spain will usually be very poor for the UK. Last year was a rare set up with a very finely placed low to elongate the heat pattern throughout summer.

What would you folks define as NW Europe? For me I would say UK,Ireland, France north of Orleans, Benelux, Iceland and western Norway. Maybe Germany as well north and west of say Dusseldorf.
Iceland, UK, Ireland, Norway and Northern coasts of the mainland with eastern extent up to Denmark. I'm probably wrong but if I was in Northern Germany or France but with at least some distance away from the coast I would be fuming if I had similar weather to the UK.

Fantastic thunderstorm this visibility down to 100m and horizontal torrential rain

Wasn't the East meant to have another sunny day today?

That was a nice one day summer, hopefully next year is better.

In what way is 5C below average "typical British summer". The permanently cold fans have a very loose relationship with the truth.

Not going to lie it was really nice to have the fresher start this morning. An occasional break from the heat is welcome, but worried about how long this break is looking, and whether it's actually a new long term pattern and not just a break.

Completely overcast but 24C. Beats last month's 10C when it was overcast at least.

This is why you don't hope for "short blips". Whatever dry spell we get pray to the weather Gods every day for its extension. Instead of guilt tripping people, campaign for water companies to build reservoirs for the first time in 30 years. A global laughing stock if you can't handle a month of low rain.

I wonder if the unusually warm SSTs might be creating a marked temp differential between polar regions and sub tropical regions, fuelling the jet into action.
Will be interesting to see how the jet behaves in coming week.
Mid Atlantic towards the West where jet stream begins is cooler than average, the temperature gradient between that area and UK seas is lower.

Unexpected storms woke me up last night, day of very hazy sunshine today and warm again at 24C. All kicking off again near Birmingham,

Just sprayed another load of Beconase up my nose and now i'm off up the pub to sit in the beer garden and watch the test match. Quite splendid here now. Just high level cloud, hazy sunshine and temperature up to 24c with a bit of humidity thrown in. I expect the beer garden will be packed with people enjoying this jolly nice weather.
Same here odd spot of very light rain this morning, but hazy sunshine now and really doesn't feel like we've shifted any heat away so far. 24C.

Definitely a trend to stronger Atlantic, may be in for a more traditional NW/SE split. Not great for midlands we usually get stuck in an overcast no mans land.

24C completely clear again. Don't know when we'll see this weather again so make the most of it.

Decent enough day 9 on ECM but would think there's room for a lot more twists when this is the day 8 chart:
Barely 5hpa difference spanning an entire continent and half an ocean. A return to settled may be favourite but I've seen it countless times; extended dry spell, jokes about when it will end, a small blip, then suddenly summer is over.

5th official day of heatwave here. 26C low humidity cooling down nicely overnights certainly doesn't feel like one.

Bit more of a slow burner today, temps recovering from a cooler overnight low so probably a later max here of around 28C about 5-6pm.
Same, comfortable low of 10C last night, 21C now probably peak at 26C, what's not to like.

Surely a few days of showery weather isn’t a bad thing? It’s not like it’s forecast to be a washout, is it? If we carry on with very warm and settled weather right through to July, then there are going to be drought issues.
A few days of cooler and more unsettled weather between prolonged settled spells isn’t a bad thing, as long as the former doesn’t end up dominating for weeks upon end.
Flabby directionless lows have a habit of sticking in one place for weeks at a time. I'd just rather not take the risk.

28C consistent light breeze to take the edge off it really doesn't feel hot. Perfect summer day.

Is it an official station?
Porthmadoc and Woodvale (nera Blackpool) both showing 29c. West is best again, especially those locations with some hills to the East giving a fohn effect.
Shows as an official one on weatherobs site. I hope that's not a rounded 30 though

26C perfect with the breeze

Brighton is the San Francisco of the UK, nothing like London
I'm sure Brighton is a lovely place no need to put it down like that.
