  1. Conditions really conducive to snowfall today...pity the coldest upper air temps have finally arrived as this cold spell is ending......enjoyable 2 weeks though and I suspect the next cold spell will be much more supportive to snowfall with much colder air spilling down due to SSW.....Don't think we will have long to wait either....all eyes on models and I for one am expecting upgrades over coming days. We can already see colder signal being picked up possibly from late next week / early following week in models and with such volatility at the moment dont rule out a sudden switch to very cold at a much closer time frame....
  2. Promising charts today....I think we could be heading colder even by next weekend ......likely to be more bite to next cold spell as much colder air spilling down from the north.....will be interesting model viewing for sure....I love when the next cold spell is on the horizon as the current one ends and I think a good chance we will be in that position come Sunday
  3. Yes I will be sad to see the mild return after the weekend ....although marginal, it has been on the whole an enoyable spell and I have seen snow fall on three different occasions (27th Decemeber, 31st December 7th Jan with small accumulations) , had lots of sunshine, numerous hard frosts and ice, freezing fog, hail and sleet showers from this weeks easterly which was wierd ....and it all kicked off when storm Bella went through on 26th Decenber...basically the kitchen sink thrown at us n winter weather terms in this 2 week period ..... From experience when we get several smaller snowfalls down here this early in the season, it is followed up by more severe cold and heavier snow later......winter 2107/2018 being one example....I honestly believe that this winter is only getting started with much more fun and games to come....
  4. Why do you guys think is the reason that these northerlys have been so marginal this winter? High Sea temps around our shores? Lack of polar sea ice further north? I recall the 2017/2018 winter prior to the beast, had several polar north westerlies that brought a lot of snow up north and even a few light dustings down here. But this winter even straight northerlies seem to bring more rain and sleet than snow.... Just curious....
  5. Nice covering here in South Kilkenny today.. heavy frost last night and started snowing at 7.30 am this morning ....instantly sticking to frozen surfaces in temp of - 2 degrees... still light flurries falling as I type but temp now + 1 degree with a slight thaw.... .feels Baltic....
  6. While looking at radar Scotland gets hammered with snow from the same front.. ...typical Still according to Met Eireann some places will see a few cms ....so some will likely get lucky
  7. Should turn to snow as it sinks South and east in to the colder air .....
  8. Cirrently showing mostly as rain on netweather radar over northwest ....with a few blobs of sleet and snow mixed in.....Hopefully will turn more generally to snow as it continues to move inland
  9. Tonight and tomorrow morning looks like the last chance saloon for snow from this current cold spell for most before it turns less cold / milder over weekend in to next week...Good luck to everyone and post photos if you are in the snow zone.......Hopefully a much less marginal cold spell will follow later in January with more significant snow for all ....
  10. Very icy here in South Kilkenny this morning....... had several showers pass through during the night that froze on roads and pavements leaving everything like an ice rink...several crashes on the roads here.... if upper temps were a degree or two lower we would have had a nice covering of snow overnight....pathetic easterly so far in that regard but hopefully showers will turn more to snow today and tomorrow as upper temps lower further......prolonged cold spell at this stage and likely to last until weekend at least bit all the while very marginal unfortunately.....Hopefully something more substantial cold and snow wise just around the corner..... ..also wouldn't be surprised to see current cold spell extend and become colder without much of a warm up....models could flip that way in next few days quite easily.. all to play for
  11. Agree ...not enough posters to make the change worthwhile....also, although weather does vary greatly on the island, I do like popping in to see what the weather is like in different areas, seeing the snow / lightning photos etc.... Has been disappointing cold spell so far in that synoptics look good but has been very marginal. Lovely frosty nights though and I have seen snow fall here on 27th December, 31st December (including temporary dusting) and a light flurry earlier this evening (even though radar was showing rain)... ..beats the mild South West winds anyday... but really hope the SSW lands favourably to give us a non marginal snowy set up - at least for a few days....
  12. Much better GFS alright....Hopefully it is on the right track and we all see a good covering of snow at some stage next week.....
  13. A band of rain sleet or snow likely to lush down from north around Wed night or Thursday I would think......wintry showers following.....up to then chance of some sleet or snow showers in eastern Leinster could give s dusting / light covering in places
  14. Proper Northerly looks dodgy now but that might change.....models kind of messy looking tonight albeit still cold ....but rather than a'northerly, it looks like a messier evolution with proper heights not gaining traction in Greeenland but snow opportunities still in the mix ....lots of twists and turns to come no doubt
  15. Met Eireann going for wintry showers over high ground bit I expect to see some snow to lower levels....upper temps now looking to be near -7 or-8 ....Will feel bitter either way
  16. Happy New Year everyone from South Kilkenny. .. ..interesting that Met Eireann have updated their outlook on their website for next week just now, and it reads much more wintry than earlier .....temperatures struggling above freezing with wintry showers or longer spells of sleet or snow and hard frosts
  17. Unusual to see low lying road covered in snow with the higher hills still green in the background..... hopefully a taste of what's around the corner for all snow lovers as we descend into winter season proper....
  18. yes and GFS at just 168 hours has UK and Ireland in cold NE flow and risk of snow.....long way to go for winter yet
