  1. i did not get any snow in Calgary last week..had a little bit just over a week ago but nothing much..was very cold over the weekend got close to -30c Saturday night..has warmed up now and will be relatively mild all week and into next weekend..highs between -2c and 0c except on Weds when it will be -15c just for that day only.
  2. yep sometimes you can have too much information..that's why i never stray into the model discussion thread because most of it is pure BS
  3. is it?...even looking from my side of the pond i couldn't see any sw winds and mild conditions...then again i cant see any raging cold either
  4. Looks like the States and much of eastern Canada will stay snow free for at least another week
  5. Sian Lloyd and sexy dont sit happily with my breakfast
  6. Had some funny temps across Calgary yesterday afternoon..it reached -1c where my office is..when driving home i live in the south east...i took 84th street which is in the far east of the city..there the temp was -12c then i swung west and went down 52nd and the temp rose to -3c by time i headed slightly east to my house the temp there was -7c so im guessing the mild air never made it right across the city..was -13c at my house this morning..not the 0c predicted.
  7. i have never seen a rainbow here in Alberta..they are about as rare as snow is back home
  8. what milder air?? has been pretty frigid all weekend..looks like we have Chinook rolling in later today and through tomorrow..cold this morning with the cold conditions of last last week and the weekend holding on until this afternoon when the temps are predicted to rise from -15c to 0c by evening..then +5/6c tomorrow then cooling off again later in the week..no snowstorms forecast though?
  9. what constitutes severe cold in the met office eyes??..sounds pretty standard fare for the UK in the winter reading that..not as though it is going to be -20c like it is here right now
  10. well we would have to have a lot of members who were under the Age of 10 for that to be a valid comment..that pretty much sums up a lot of winters from 96-2008 so you would have to be born after 2003 not to have some memory of those winters.
  11. its snowing here again today temps are -15c not much in the way of snow...stays relatively cold through the weekend..then next week could be interesting in Calgary anyway with the temps looking to flip flop from -12c to +12c and back to -12c in the space of 72hrs.
  12. Russia was a lot snowier at this time of year when those guys paid a visit.
  13. they are always going mad in the model thread..the mild air that was going to flood the prairies this week now looks like it wont happen..if anything its going to get progressively colder as the week goes on...this i think is good news for downstream pattern changes across Europe maybe not so good news for you in Newfoundland
  14. we are talking about Major roads and motorways in around large towns and cities..i have never heard of any size able population centre say above 25,000 being cut off for any length of time..sure small rural communities it may happen..but that happens here too...also you dont have prolonged periods of severe cold..once the snow slightly thaws and refreezes it becomes solid and the wind wont blow it around..it only takes one day for the temp to creep above freezing for a few hours for this to happen..i mean i live out on the prairies where a tree is novelty and there are no such things as hedgerows..you would think snow would be blowing around constantly all day every day when its not snowing..during the winter..but just one day when it jumps above freezing the snow stabilizes and it doesn't go anywhere...also things grind to a halt here too..but only the day its snowing next day everything is back to normal.
  15. Major roads would not be disrupted for more than a week..people assume cold = snow..i dont think it has ever snowed 7 days without a break anywhere in the UK..Cold winters are often dry winters..you could go weeks with no snow..once you get through the initial disruption of a snow fall then there are no problems thereafter until it snows again...a 63 type winter would not be endless weeks of snowfall.
  16. im not one for pattern matching as you know..but the 8-16 day chart does have striking similarities to Dec 2010..esp across N.America very cold out west where i am..warm on the east coast..cold into Europe..difference this year its not a La nina winter..im thinking were cold to take hold across Europe i think it will hang around for the duration.
  17. Funnily enough i actually prefer Edmonton to Calgary as a city..in terms of weather i dont think there is much to choose between them...this will be my first winter in Calgary and the prospect of milder interludes is appealing..however i think the summers are better in Edmonton...but the winters are too long and too cold even for me.
  18. im wondering why not much attention is paid to the North American snow cover as the jet moves from west to east..surely the amount of snow and ice would have an impact to the jet and pressure patterns leading to possible downstream changes as it exit the eastern seaboard into the north Atlantic?
  19. its -10c with a windchill of -20c right now here in Calgary..that's a bit chilly
  20. Had a big fall in temp this morning went from +6c to -7c in the space of about 15 mins.
  21. Having lived in Edmonton i can say like most Prairie cities it never get comfortably warm during the winter..only Calgary is the exception to this rule.
  22. Since when has anyone ever trusted the French or Americans
