  1. if it is food prices you are worried about you need to look what is happening further a field than the UK..The UK only produces a very small fraction of the global food basket.
  2. the poster has experience of living in south west with its own micro climate of being surrounded by warm water s on three sides...very often cold snowy set ups here end as rain/sleet where other places would get snow.
  3. think it would be more rain or sleet in the south and south west..wet snow in wales
  4. yes i remember this event we had a spell of heavy rain and sleet which cleared overnight and as the temperature plummeted the next morning the roads became like a skating rink as everything froze solid...almost crashed my car that morning.
  5. im not an expert and im more interested in what happens over here in western Canada than the UK..but i think the ECM around 216hrs is more plausible considering the SSW..pressure begins to rise quite markedly over the Western Arctic and into Alaska which in terms of long term cold could be better for the Western Europe and the UK than what is shown on GFS.
  6. the weather in England was terrible...it pretty much rained everyday i was there and real rain and wind too..i got soaked a few times and had to invest in a brolly..i didn't see the sun once in 2 weeks..this weekend has been glorious back in Calgary not a cloud in the sky..you could almost think it was summer!
  7. didnt he tweet this kind of stuff about the december just gone...his rep took a major pounding last winter in N.America.
  8. im glad im flying back to Calgary tomorrow..it has done nothing but rain and be dull for the 2 weeks i have been home..i forgotten how crappy and depressing the UK winter can be!!
  9. its the same temperature in Calgary -18c to -20c and -27c with the windchill..didnt stopping walking to starbucks for a coffee in just my jumper though..not sure what all the fuss is about?
  10. it can...trouble is UK winter default setting is for it to be mainly mild and wet being located where it is...so it is much easier to forecast mild wet spells of weather than cold snowy ones..where i live cold and snowy is the default setting trying to predict future mild spells is very difficult and often they just dont happen...sound familiar?
  11. you live in Plymouth what do you expect??..even cold and snow wouldnt make Plymouth any less miserable and depressing
  12. Looks like a filthy drive home from Heathrow on Saturday..i forgotten what it is like to drive in the rain!
  13. Didn't this very site predict a summer with shades of 1976 very recently?
  14. always makes me smile when charts form 47 and 62/63 are rolled out in these situations...straw clutching at its finest
  15. really?...how come the coldest recorded Decembers are not as cold as the coldest Jans and Febs then?
  16. Not necessarily varies from year to year..some years can be relatively snow free.
  17. its not like that on a daily basis..yes it can swing wildly but mainly in spring and late autumn..i have seen temps swing from a max of 90f to a max of 28f in less than 48 hrs here..best time for that to happen is early to mid May and early to mid October..hence the tornado season is April through May into mid June.
  18. what you are showing are set ups where cold weather happens at the same time not when the UK follows suit..here are 3 recent very cold winters across North America 2002/3...1988/89...1976/77..none of which were cold in the UK
  19. trouble is alot of people who love cold weather are the same people who also enjoy hot weather in the summer
  20. So are you blaming the models for the weather you get rather than the weather they predicted?
  21. dunno why its so difficult sleet is just a rain/snow mix..often seen snow flakes mixed in with rain..other scenario is ice rain where the snow flake has melted sufficiently to fall like a rain drop and look like rain but when hits the windscreen of your car you can see some ice still contained within. I also find it bizarre when people say it was sleeting quite heavily but it did not settle??..well it wont... only snow will settle.
  22. what happened to the ramblings of Joe B that everyone was posting??..Dec 10 all over again gumpf on its way etc...didnt he also have a bet with Peirs Corbyn who said it would be mild?
