  1. Exactly that! We've been seeing Lows with core pressures to rival Hurricanes central pressures! But North of us ,so far North they've impacted the winter ice formation as they rattled through? If you look at shape, position & speed of the Polar Night Jet You can see it is shifted from a central position to one more over the north of the Atlantic area? Folk with more knowledge than I can tell you what this configuration has meant for H.P. impacting us & now this run of windy lows we're in? I might be a tad early in thinking this but if the P.N.J. sits in this current position there will be a potential ozone impacts (destruction) as the sun returns as we move through Feb & also what a final warming in this position would mean for the surface weather down the line from it?
  2. Mother N. seems to like 'balance' so I guess She's none too pleased about how warm the south of the N. Atlantic/G.O.M. have become? It would not surprise me if we do see an increase in flow from South to North esp. since we are busy mixing out the Arctic Ocean from both the entrances? (Atlantification/Pacification) As for Arctic heat waves? Folk who've been posting here a while will have become used to my moaning about the sky high temps around the basin the last 2 decades esp. when we're having 'washout summers'/flooding here in the UK! The changes that I've seen occur up there since my kiddies were born are enormous &, to my mind at least, post the largest threats to us of rapid, 'unexpected', climate events which no one will call out as false/exaggerated/not worth concern!!!
  3. I've plumped for 3.5 to 4 but hold fears that I'll find myself on the low side? I'd also think that any doubling would be merely a 'snapshot' as at such levels surely we see bits of the old carbon cycle resurrected & entering into the mix even if we have reduced our emissions to zero?
  4. Bloody Weather's as bad as the Govt. a.t.m.!!! Just make yer bloody mind up! We have folk travelling on Christmas day!.....or not.... What seems sure is we will see some snow at some point?
  5. On La Palma we saw EQ's reach a new high yesterday & , so far, today seems to be following suit? Any reports of the Volcano 'winding down' seem a little wide of the mark right now? In Iceland it takes 2 to 3 weeks for activity at the crust/mantle boundary to hit the surface so this recent 'uptick' might be the surface manifestation of those first M5.0's we saw 2 weeks back? Suffice to say most of the EQ's are being placed in the mid chamber (10 to 14km?) but the noise ceiling makes it hard to get a fix on EQ's closer to the surface and so , common practice dictates, they get shunted into that 'mid-chamber'? With another M5.0 a day or so ago from down at the crust/mantle boundary things do not look like calming down any time soon! (IMHO?)
  6. So West Yorks, are we lamp post watching on Friday night? I expect the tops to be white when I wake up on Saturday!
  7. Draw a triangle on a bit of paper. That is a cross section of the ridge on La Palma? Extend the base out either side and you have the plains around the base of the ridge Put a dot in the middle of the triangle, that is the source of an Earthquake Now draw 'ripples, emanating out from that dot, these are the 'P & S' waves moving out from the source? When they hit the sides of the Triangle they die out so only the ripples pushing out of the base of the triangle carry on on their way Now place one measuring station on the ridge and one on the plains below? What do each of the stations see of the 'energy' of that Quake? Do they see the same or does one get more energy directed its way than the other? The station on the ridge is the 'Montana De La Brena' measuring station on La Palma What I've described is the only way I can explain to myself 'How' Montana station gets to report some BIIIIG Quakes (borne out by the spectrograph readouts?) but the two stations down below on the plains do not?
  8. 2 things SnowBear, 1/ due to the 'noise floor' EQ's shallower than 10km appear to be shifted down to 10 or 11km? 2/ P & S waves have difficulties when 'fluids' are encountered? S waves cannot pass through fluids and P waves get deflected/distorted There are 3 measuring stations on La Palma and since yesterday we have begun to see 'asymmetric plots' of shallower quakes (as I say any EQ in the body of the island gets bumped down to the 10km /11km level?) The most impacted monitoring station happens to be the one closest to the vent (El Paso?) & so I harbour concerns that what we are seeing is the invasion of the country rock by Magma intrusions? I'm not saying that the Magma itself is the 'Fluid' causing the distortions of the EQ plots but that the intrusion is the source of the EQ's as it invades the country Rock? (& why Sunday/yesterday was so active EQ wise?) Past eruptions has left the island shot through with Sheet Dykes which helped to form massive cisterns of trapped ground water collected over tens of thousands of years of rainfall?(all water on La Palma is sourced from such reserves?) My worry is intrusive Magma flashing to steam such reserves If you've ever seen a pressure cooker blow you'll know such would not be good!!!
  9. Hi SnowBear! plenty of what looks like 'harmonics' in among all the more defined quakes to so I wouldn't be expecting the output of lava to drop off any time soon either? Luckily most of the output is flowing over older flows so it's not causing more damage to the infrastructure there? Certainly worth keeping an eye on over the coming days I reckon?
  10. The number of EQ's yesterday was the real story IMHO? Today looks to have set off with similar vigour! I have to link the uptick with the arrival, 2 weeks back, of larger quakes in the lower chamber (Crust/Mantle boundary 30 to 40km?) Cones in Iceland took 3 weeks for such quakes to show impact at surface so this is in the right time frame & EQ's are now firmly centred in the mid chamber (10 to 15km)
  11. EQ activity down at the Crust/Mantle boundary keeps getting stronger with an M4.5 down at 36km occurring around 8 this morning? This will be new Magma forming and migrating to the chamber('s) above With SO2 still pumping out well above the levels required before we could expect things to start calming down there we have to expect more to come over the coming days
  12. Sat through some whilst I watched the fun! Very short strikes I might add?
  13. Italian town sets European record after 29 inches of rain falls in 12 hours WWW.AXIOS.COM Torrential rains have triggered flooding and mudslides in northwestern Italy this week.
  14. What's going on with the African Plate??? Another earthquake swarm under Crete the passed 2 days! I hope the Anatolian fault doesn't get dragged into it all, quite a bit of movement tied up there & around Istanbul!
  15. I have to wonder if the wildfire smoke, from so early in the melt season and penetrating so far into the Siberian side of the basin?, scattered some of the incoming Solar leading to more retention? If so we have a number of years of such in front of us I fear!
  16. Well storms to the East of us, storms to the West of us but nothing for us here in the Upper Calder Valley!
  17. Warnings are out again today for heavy storms for the same areas the 'DANA' system flooded yesterday!
  18. So Larry is now a 'cane and set to become a major by sometime Saturday? I think we'd better keep our eyes on Him esp. seeing Spain N.Y. right now!!!
  19. Remember the Climate change deniers, back in 2012 (?) when we saw the first 'melt' at summit telling us that it was a 160 yr 'cycle' of melt over the summit?....this was now the number 3 instance of the last decade......I wonder what they would say today?
