  1. 'major' cool down?... of course these temps were never going to last, but we have had far more mild days then was originally expected so for it to turn colder was an inevitability. that chart for next wednesday is a joke tbh, they are notoriously inaccurate for eg at the start of this milder spell they predicted 6c! it was closer to 12c! so yes it will cool down for a while, but cold? i dont think so for the time of year, certainly ATM theres no 'ice days' or anything close. i still expect daytime max's to be within the 'normal' range albeit on the cold side going off current predicted charts.
  2. tbh i think some are getting alittle carried away with the suggested cooler weather ahead. imho theres precious little to suggest that theres anything other then 'below average' temps in fi, rather then raging cold. this is exactly what can be expected in early spring.
  3. i wouldnt call this an 'early' spring, its a couple of weeks behind recent years.
  4. indeed dispite the more wintry synoptics shown by both the gfs and ecm (havnt viewed others) this morning there still isnt any appreciable snow on offer. the uppers on the gfs 00z are still pretty mild until well into fi... which actually reminds me of spring 1975, cold northerlies until june
  5. yep... there will be some cold, thats pretty normal for march and has already been stated... ATM theres no indication of a freeze/snow away from favoured northern hills. and if we see snow showers? so what? what use are they? about as much use as sunshine in november!
  6. erm... it IS 'near' average ill second that! march looks like being very very 'normal' if the 06z is to be believed... no heatwaves, no freeze.
  7. i tire of the snow about 2 hours after its stopped. after the initial enjoyment of this phenomina it soon loses its appeal.
  8. banging it down atm.... but alot had melted on roads etc.
  9. :o EXACTLY! its a phenomina that makes spring a joy! and it only seems to be early spring when its manifest... its melting here quite rapidly and after tonights snow and ice tomorrow should see a widespread thaw setting in.. funny how it melts so easy, just a fraction above 0c and its away...
  10. quite correct, it is VERY unusual for the beeb to predict that far out but that is exactly what was said.
  11. i agree, it was a splendid winters day, not too mild, silly temps spoil the seasons but today was perfect for me!
  12. here we go 4c isnt unusual at this time of year in milder conditions at dawn . strange...i dont recall seeing you happy when things were cold, your posts seem to ALWAYS mock the lack of mild.... you dont even seem pro-cold, just mild mocking... what strange people frequent the internet.
  13. i find it totally frustrating to get cold spells in spring, especially if winter has been mild. this trend has dogged recent springs. spring warmth is IMHO the best weather type.
  14. ive consulted my work diary and it wasnt cold enough to prevent or change the work we were doing in late feb 82, so whilst some parts of the country may well have had some less mild weather, and this would be perfectly normal, the cold , frosts and snow did not return to derby. i dont think for one moment that the current mild will last until april! although it largely did in 1980! (there was a cold easterly blip in march), the point of this thread was to highlight the possibility that 'winter is over' in terms of lengthy cold is a slight possibility IF the pattern gets locked into an atlantic regime like feb 80. as i see it, and i may well be totally wrong, i believe the chances of a lengthy cold spell have now been diminished, but are not extinct! ...... this is what i like about our climate... the variability, uncertainty and variety of weather we get. fair enough, but do you point this out when the coldies are likening current synoptics to 47, 63, 79, 81, 85, 86, 87, 91?.... nah...thought not!!!
  15. but the difference between 82 and 86 was that in 86 the threat was always there, lurking, totally unlike 82 where the threat totally dissappeared. as it happens feb 86 was/is my most hated feb ever. all we got here was bitingly cold easterlies with days below 0c and no snow.
  16. nope, i know nothing about stratospheric warming, nor its likely effects and although the info might well be on the forum somewhere, i have not the time to trawl through . my point was simply that 'winter was over in mid jan 82' so when substantial pattern change occurs like this current one, is it not possible that like 82, 09 's potential for real wintry weather also be drastically reduced? i dont know if there was stratospheric warming or cooling in 82, and tbh im very dubious about scources to prove/disprove a point that appears to be picked up and put down at will. tbh i doubt very much whether we have seen the last of the cold, but i has happened before.
  17. ive often stated that the winter of 81-2 was my perfect winter, there was plenty of deep snow for a month or so which gave way to a much milder regime set in for the second half of winter. this was a classic example of pattern change totally removing any further wintry weather in that winter/spring. THIS is just one example and perhaps the most extreme of what pattern change could offer us this year now that the previous cold block has now been removed. and is the basis of what the recent 'is winter over' comments ive already made. surely after such a severe cold spell through december/early jan everyone would have thought that more cold/snow was likely?.. it would have been fair to think so.... but it didnt happen. now im NOT saying that winter IS over, even im not that stupid  but realistically remembering the lessons of january 1982, there IS imho a very real though slight possibility that this may occur again. the atlantic has now kicked back in, the question is.... how long for? true, it might be a 'mild blip', or it could be in for some time, lasting weeks, months even... it isnt beyond the realms of possibility that we have atlantic driven weather from now until april, in which case winter (as in freezing cold/snow) IS over. now i know that in FI there are signes of blocking recurring and this morning theres even a brief easterly... but that is FI and as far as im concerned must be ignored, all of us have just been taken in by FI synoptics that failed miserabley to deliver the winter it promised, even though it has been the coldest spell for many years. could someone with the knowlege please explain why january 09 cant follow january 82?
  18. nope, i go abroad once a year for a week (its all my job will allow), ive just been an outdoor working for 36 years.. (gawd...that long!). i find strangely enough that when im not working im not so keen on the heat! but as long as i can cool off im ok, i dont mind getting dirty and sweaty... cleaning/cooling off is so pleasant.
  19. heat doesnt bother me one bit... ive worked outdoors in 30+c and whilst its rather dirty and gritty its great to cool off, as long as i have water im fine.. i love warm air on my body.. its the cold i detest, i hate having to wrap-up, i hate cold pains, i hate my big hooter getting cold, i hate cold air in my lungs....
  20. fascinating stuff indeed mind you, thunderstorms 'of old' seemed to be much better then the grey messy things we get today. ceratinly the ones in the 60's and early 70's were much different then modern ones. my dad always used to tell me about storms which lasted the night, and ones that 'came back again'... folklore maybe, but interesting.
  21. funny innit.... even though the people responsible for creating them openly admit it... ufo enthusiasts STILL wont accept it and carry on claiming its aliens B)
  22. interesting.. i was watching a thunderstorm in 1974, june, it was a sunday .. i was looking south from my parents bedroom window. the storm tracked slowly from my right to my left. whilst we were still under the squall line and before the rain started proper i observed a 'ball of light' about 2 miles away heading out of the cloud and traveling foreward from it. i guess that was 'ball lightning'..?
