  1. Currently the temperature is still well below freezing up here. Any precipitation is likely to fall as snow. I've yet to witness falling snow for my area this winter. Hopefully that changes in the next few hours.
  2. Recent update from the Met Office is for light snow for this area 11am onwards.
  3. Big change from yesterday. Hard frost and -5C.
  4. That's astonishing, and worrying, at the same time.
  5. A dry start which quickly gave way to something wetter. Surprised that Aberdeen was colder than Alford this morning, that doesn't happen often. Looking good for a chilly evening, tomorrow looks fairly grim then lots of wind Monday into Tuesday. Bravo on planting 140 trees
  6. Couple of interesting comments from Matt Hugo BBC weather this morning. Signs of cold weather later in February. Another mild week ahead. Parts of the UK have yet to register a frost this winter. Kirkwall's last frost wast 19th November 2019.
  7. Meanwhile over on the fantasy thread, some are still fawning over 10 day charts.
  8. I've just checked and the ground around the house is also quite soft. That's surprising given how mild and windy it's been of late.
  9. A couple of days ago, I took a picture of a butterfly that flew inside the house. Today, on a trip to a nearby village, I noted13C on the car display. Last week, the geese that winter around these parts, suddenly left. Historically they tend to leave early spring. Absolutely bonkers winter. Here's a current webcam image from upper mountain Cairngorm:
  10. 13C noted while I was in Alford this afternoon. Absolutely ridiculous. By comparison, the pictures below were taken end of January 2019. Spot the difference
  11. Final day of January which ends on a mild note. Currently sunny and 8C. Rest of the day doesn't look too bad:
  12. Time to invest in face masks, first confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK.
  13. Still to be confirmed, but January 2020 is expected to be the fifth warmest since records began. No surprise there.
  14. The only falling snow I've witnessed this winter was 2 weeks ago at Cairngorm 600mts asl. Apart from that, a couple of very light overnight dustings around the house. Unsurprising given how mild winter has been so far.
  15. Almost 5pm and still plenty of daylight. Be glad to see the back of this pathetic winter!
  16. 10C strong SW winds bringing blustery showers.
  17. BBC 2 8pm Winter watch live from Cairngorm.
  18. Silver Birch is mostly water and take ages to dry out. Leave them outside and covered for a couple of years. Always leave the bark on Silver Birch, it's full of oil and burns quickly and super hot. Bang two bits of Cherry together. If you hear a dull thud, then they aren't seasoned enough. If you hear a light ting noise, you're good to go.
  19. An unexpected visitor. Butterflies in January
  20. Just a quick update to the above. The geese and swans haven't been sighted locally in over a week.I suspect that the mild temperatures have prompted an early departure.
  21. Witnessed actual falling heavy snow heading over Tillyfourie en'-oute to Inverurie. Not going to lie, it actually put a smile on my face
  22. I haven't been drinking, but it's been snowing slightly over night. Around the house some rather pathetic patchy amounts but more for the surrounding hills.
  23. Glenshee was epic that winter. So much snow the tows were almost buried.
  24. Met Office way out with their temperatures forecast for my area. Forecast 5C. Actual 0C.
