  1. There won’t be snow cover of any significance to give us that set up. I am not seeing any compelling charts that make me think we’ll be under snow cover at any point in the next 7 days…not really
  2. Honestly, it’s like listening to a bunch of spoilt brats sometimes on this forum. We haven’t been short changed and winter isn’t over and we haven’t been promised anything other than normal - which is exactly what we’re getting. We had a period of unusually cold conditions prior to Christmas and many parts of the country saw laying snow for about a week. That was unusual and so we can characterise winter so far as being, relatively average with a week of below average temperatures and c.1-3 inches of snow in some southern parts of the country. I don’t know about anybody else, but i’d take that if anybody offered it to me on the run up to any winter. Winter in the UK is generally characterised by wet, somewhat cold and often windy conditions. Never in any of our lifetimes has it been constant sub-zero temperatures with weeks of snow and ice. Those hoping for a foot of snow and weeks of sub-zero averages are only ever going to live their lives in endless disappointment. Sometimes, the remarkable will happen, but it’s remarkable for a reason. I didn’t win the lottery last night despite playing it every week, complaining about it makes me look like a bit of a n*b though
  3. Ignoring the fantasy of 300hr charts, there’s nothing much in the GfS or ECM, it’s been fairly standard winter fare for a while and looks to be the outlook
  4. I don’t think so, no. It wasn’t as widespread nor as cold. It was good though, glad we’ve had a decent spell of cold and snow this winter. We can move on knowing it hasn’t been a complete wash out.
  5. ECM looks pretty good for the Christmas and NY period, no nasties from the Atlantic. Nice and settled, perfect weather
  6. There’s more spread there than a family sized tub of Flora. All to play for, but I suspect we’re in for a mild Jan.
  7. Yes, I don’t mind the odd frosty morning or some snowfall. But, I can only imagine those that are desperate for prolonged and extreme cold probably don’t own their own house, and don’t pay their utility bills. When I lived at home with my folks, or rented somebody else’s property I used to long for extreme winters, not sure I see the fun in it these days I’ll be honest.
  8. Well I enjoyed the cold snap, made this winter feel somewhat seasonal. At least we can look back on 2022/2023 and say it wasn’t a complete failure. Spring on the horizon now?
  9. Amazing here in west Bedfordshire, started at 10:30pm last night and steady snow all night. Probably a good few inches this morning, enough to stop one of the cars from leaving the driveway. We were outside of the MetO yellow warning zone, but the forecast changed last night and a watched the radar and it was clear the snow band was moving quite a bit further west than was expected. Enjoyable evening of lamppost watching
  10. Thought I’d give us a place to discuss snow casts, snow depth charts, and the inevitable envy inducing photos and reports of folk’s luck with the white stuff Nothing here in Beds yet, but the apps have all changed in the last hour to potential for snow this evening…
  11. I don’t think there is anything unreasonable about hoping for snow, I do myself! But, I don’t think the only memorable weather or typical winter weather needs snow. I was literally just chatting with my dad on the phone, his comment was he doesn’t recall ever seeing the trees so heavy with frost - so I’d say that makes it memorable
  12. It’s the coldest winter period we’ve had for over 10 years - hardly forgettable! What else do you expect for seasonal weather in the UK? 3’ foot of snow, frozen lakes and migrating polar bears???
  13. I recently discovered the ‘ignore’ feature works wonders for removing the illiterate waffle - apply this generously and you essentially self moderate to the point of pure MO discussion bliss The shear fact I saw your comment is a badge of honour!
  14. I’m afraid that, yes it’s unreasonable to assume that, but perhaps it comes down to experience Snow depths for next Sunday, 18th cannot be predicted by ANY computer. We can’t even work out if and where it will snow in 2 days time, let alone 10.
  15. Why would anybody be worried about what the output of the GFS (or any model) is, unless maybe it’s a life threatening storm..
  16. Hmm…username doesn’t check out I kind of agree, but this is the MO thread, not the ‘will we see snow in 3 days time’ thread. The whole purpose, or supposed purpose of MO discussion is to discuss how the models are shaping up for any period.
  17. It’s the trend, Mark has reason to be cautious and I think the MOGREPS is showing similar uncertainty at the same point. Does align fully? no, I grant you that, but the uncertainty with a worrying split of members going north is there quite clearly
  18. It depends what you mean by ‘running out’. Capacity induced blackouts will certainly feel like we’ve run out of energy, and they are quite a real risk right now…more so than Joe Public realises
