Sunday 17th June - Weather Reports And General Chat.
SnowJoke replied to Methuselah's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
Sure I saw a flash a while ago to the north east of MK followed by a low distant rumble, wasn't really expecting anything and watching euro 2012 at the same time. It was one of those catch something out of the corner of your eye events. -

Been hammering it down in MK for the last 30mins. Really heavy at times, sort of surrounded for a time by a cluster of showers which are merging into a longer spell of rain. -

Looks very thundery around these parts, some very strange mid level undulatus formations and even what looked like mammatus in places, with low bubbly cumulus forming underneath on and off all afternoon, last hour has seen some sporadic large spots of rain starting & stopping also. -
Missed all the thunder in MK today, heavy shower moved through around 4:30pm, very large raindrops but most I think were evaporating before getting to ground level. Potent looking cell has popped up just to the east of MK area, some good hard edged convection illuminated by the setting sun 15mins ago. Looks like it'll probably die off once the sun sets though.

3 rumbles of thunder in MK just now from a fast moving shower, over before the fat lady even got singing. lol -

It's being caused by convergence if you look at the current wind profile, WNW meeting a strong SW wind directly in a line where the showers are forming. -

only 3 rumbles so far, lots of heavy rain & small hail for 20mins. Just starting to clear and can see clear blue sky behind the band. Boom, it's off again. lol -

thunder in MK from developing overhead cell along the convective line running west to east. -

Thin line of convective development running all the way from the wash down towards Wiltshire at the minute, can see the band and one shower sitting to the north of MK, strong towers with dark bases. Looks very thundery anyway. -

It still looked like this as it moved away from MK, was to far away and the view to my east was obscured by the shopping center, so was unable to tell if the meso was in contact with the ground, but it was spawning rapidly rotating scud suckers and short lived funnel clouds. On another note, there are a couple of potent cells developing close to MK at the minute, one to the north the other to the south, both have low dark bases and look like throwing out sferics at any time. -

This storm definitely appears to have super cell characteristics, on approach the clouds were shifting into the storm from the south east, when the base was close there were scud and low level formations swirling in all different directions, now it's passing the clouds are shifting towards the south east, complete 180" rotational switch. Rain and pea sized hail hit in odd waves, one minute it was hammering down the next dry again. To my south east as it cleared I saw what looked like a wall cloud at the most southerly point of precipitation and lots of scud and what appeared to be brief funnel formations at a 45-60 degree angle from the rear lowering.and some very odd movement. -

Thuberstorm now overhead in CMK, hail heavy rain and large CG lightning raining down with LOUD thunder, this thing has a mesocyvlone at the the rear I can see scud circulating and being sucked up into the updraft base. -

BBC main weather at 10:30 showed the rain and any embedded storms around the M4 corridor northwards up to Birmingham area overnight into the morning. If you south of the M4 your not going to see anything other than some drizzly rain & murk, the actions further north than originally forcast by the MET & GFS, -

Odd outside here at the minute, keep getting bursts of heavy sporadic rain drops, the wind is swirling in all directions, but oddly for the time of year and being mainly a north easterly it feels strangely warm. Also there is that musty humid smell in the air normally associated with summertime thunderstorms. -

Allready a few storms kicking off in the channel towards IOW & a couple of recent sferics to the SW of Swindon. Looks stormy outside, not in the way of dark clouds, but theres a strange sort of calm & alot of turbulence in the upper level cirrus layer which normally proceeds a summer evening & night of storms. -
Heavy showers all morning in MK, with a few breaks in between. Clouds are gaining height as the temp rises, some i've seen already with nice anvils on. No thunder from them yet, but looking at the wind convergence zone around southern england it's only a matter of time, as this will be the driving mechanism today for storms.
