I know people will say please learn a bit but!
In these conditions what are are the principal factors from the models that make forecasters clear about convective activity? I assume low 850 and surface temps together with dew points etc but why the talk of so much shower activity in the north east? Is it wind speed ? Sea temp?
TIA

Me too couldn’t see it till I zoomed in, very faint

I'd be surprised if the majority don't exceed that.
If these charts and possibilities don't get you excited you need a different hobby. The potential is huge and this coming week may not be repeated for a very long time.
If you aren't quite sure what the north sea snow machine can produce you are either new to this or haven't been paying attention.
Maybe!
Not new, member for a long time. Just 100 times bitten twice shy!

Well my family have all just laughed at me for suggesting up to 20cm come Thursday. They all state their iPhones say light snow and apparently that’s just flurries and it won’t happen. We shall see !
-
I think it could all be relative Nick. I’m expecting 20cm across the week in teesside but fully expect somewhere further north to be reporting 40cm+. If someone up near Blyth tells me they have only 15cm by Thursday it’ll be bad news for the tees valley. Just a hunch from experience

That system always looks fuller when modeled a few days ago, teesside looks ok

Only once I am shocked at that considering you live only a few miles away from me, we have had it 3 times this year alone,
Really ? Lightning in snow fall? I must have been in bed

Only seen thunder snow once , yellow sky and heavy snow, was an amazing experience. What I really want to see is a blizzard. I remember as a child in the seventies getting as much whipped up off the ground as was falling from the sky. The test was whether the lamppost at the bottom of the street disappeared. Please please let me see that again , it’s been a long long time

We also have the feature on Tuesday which should give a pretty uniform coverage.
Interesting feature that. Amazingly it’s been modeled by the gfs/ecm for at least three days now

Wit so much convective activity forecast for such a long period of time I’m not expecting the big discrepancies in totals. I think we will all do well out of this , some days favoring south toward teesside, others further north, could be wrong but this isn’t just a one off overnight event
-
Any guesses on snow depths for teesside? Comparing forecasters and rampers I’ve heard anything from a dusting to a foot!
-
Having been on here for a decade these Synoptics are a dream come true and frankly I’m a little emotional( sad I know).
charts like these would have been a dream in FI but we are just hours out. I still have an awful feeling that we will get a dusting and wonder what the fuss was about. Given the flow and the potential convective activity I’m sure I should be more positive. Once I stayed up and had a bottle of wine, convinced I wouldn’t be going to work the next day. The front broke down over the North Sea and gave us half an inch, bitten so many times!
excited - butterflies even at times , we shall see

What I’m finding odd is the difference between what is modelled and what is being forecast. In my ten years of watching these models it’s always the same. Models are predicting minus 14 uppers etc and people are talking of a foot of snow. The bbc forecast for Wolviston in Teesside gives us highs of 4 degrees all next week with the odd snow flurry, what’s going on.

I am furious. I spent all my life in s yorks looking up north at the snow! Now i move up here and they ring from home to say its the heaviest they have ever seen! This comes days after there was heavy snow to the north of me, and we got 1cm!
-
Is it me or is this "main band" of heavier snow moving in a SW to NE direction (over Scotland) unless theirs a wind change this could turn into a non event (apart from what we have now)

Is it me or does the main band behind seem to be heading too far north?

I went to Peterborough for the fist time last year.
There was a market selling second hand trash just round the corner from the railway station, things like prams and wheelchairs. It was awaful and it smelled.
I will never ever go to Peterborough again and urge anyone who has never been not to. It's actually worse then Middlesborough.

Anf yet the precipitation predicted looks significant all night?..

Is the band to intensify before reacing here? Looking at the other regional threads there is already a few inches in southend but looking at this loop
http://meteox.com/h.aspx?r=&jaar=-3&soort=loop1uur
It doesnt seem to hold a lot for us in the north?

Seconded ! Moved from Barnsley and never going home , love it up here, people are brilliant (except the savages who think it’s acceptable and/or advisable to go out to my local on Friday night in a grey adidas tracksuit)
