Just had a great nightime thunderstorm with quite abit of bright sheet lightning well it would be at night. CC`s and 1 or 2 CG`s the main part went just NE of here,it`s seems to have stopped at the moment. Did`nt expect thunder tonight I must admit. Edit: rumble of thunder then there are a few flashes SE too.

There`s some heavy rain in sw Wales now,can see cirrostratus to the south although there`s blue skies also perhaps it`s showery in nature.
-
Had 2 thundery showers pass to the east late afternoon. Then another came from the SW with 3 distant CG`s and a little sheet lightning but more thunder and a heavy fairly short shower as the thunder stopped as it came overhead.

Met Office winter NAO forecast...
Snowyowl9 replied to summer blizzard's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
I certainly agree about not wanting an atlantic wet winter as last year was no exception it`s the last thing I want to see as it dragged on and on, although we did get a huge amount of snow at one time but just for 3 days,as for a mild ,dry sunny winter it`s better but no thanks a cold mainly dry winter with more snow than rain like 2 years ago oh yes. I`d like to see summer arriving firstly though. then a cool/cold autumn not like last year. -
Looks like the coolest June since 2004 now and we`ve had 3 times more rainfall to then. If it gets back upto 15.5 it`ll be my first right guess. <_<

Thunderstorm behaviour
Snowyowl9 replied to Thunderman's topic in Hurricanes, Cyclones and Extreme weather worldwide
Wales is another place thunderstorms are much less common than other parts of the UK, yesterday and today are great eg`s not even a shower today, as other places east have seen storms. Once the fresher north or west comes then I only expect showers. There`s those very rare occasions when a thunderstorm does come from the west here just once as I`ve seen maybe more with thundery showers(rumbles) when it`s not warm/humid beforehand as thats the only time it does happen otherwise when a cold front comes from the west/NW then but usually the best storms are to our east. Last Tuesday was excellent to say the least for thunderstorms as the much warmer upper air/ humid unstable air came from the SE. I`m more than happy with what I`ve seen so far better than last year to this date by far. Never actually heard thunder by the coast. -
Very true it`s not the temp that counts so much in summer but how wet or dull it is. As for here the first 10 days of June have been very warm and with lots of sun with temps of 20 odd average,it went downhill very quick as over 3.5inches of rain came end of last week which the ground is saturated after been dry and starting to burn. Next week looks even worse with rain starting tonight as last week it broke down last Wednesday with a heavy shower. So west has been best for sunshine and warmer temps with an east wind. But this June could rival 1982 in local parts for the amount of rain never seen the river`s so full for June before. It just reached 10c in the NE on this day similar set-up to now with the jet gone AWOL except it`s not as far south as then, and nothing like as month for thunderstorms to then which some were severe. If this N-ly comes after which looks likely this month willl be remembered for some time by me.

what is a thunderstorm?....

Very interesting There must of been 40 Cg`s on Fridays storm that`s without the other lightning as there was 3/4 on the go here as there was the convergence zone coming from the SE with other cells building around. As yesterday they were just thundery showers and I always thought that you can`t get a tornado unless there`s a thunderstorm either but a funnel cloud yes as I`ve seen one in just a normal looking shower cloud which lasted for 30 mins a few years ago. -
Are You Scared Of Thunderstorms?
Snowyowl9 replied to SnowJoke's topic in Hurricanes, Cyclones and Extreme weather worldwide
Depends really where you are and where the storm is located if in a distance I`m outside in a field watching them for hours I`m totally hooked as soon as there`s that 1st rumble although when overhead it`s not a good place to be as I was yesterday but I did run undercover I go in somewhere to get a great view or the house but I can`t stay there long don`t get the full affects. Even in junior school a question came up what`s your fav things and I said thunder she thought I was crazy.  But there was this one storm that went too far in 1985 which started out a normal storm but turned severe with 2 of the most loudest lightning ever it sounded like it hit the roof of the building I was in then I ran like hell to the house then another earpopping severe strike followed by the loudest noise I`ve ever heard(I had a fear of loud noises years ago well still do with loud bangs) electric was out then of course but the fuse in the house lit up from that then it just stopped dead I`ll never forget that how it never struck anything I don`t know. -

I say a heavy/shower with a rumble or 2. If more with some lightning and thunder or no lightning and just thunder a thundery shower same goes for thundery rain. Moderate amount lightning and thunder a thunderstorm. Or in yesterday`s case with quite alot of CG`s/CC`s and sheet with torrential rain/hail a major thunderstorm. Then there`s a severe thunderstorm with frequent CG`s near continuous thunder. When it comes to nightime though you can get lightning without thunder from either distant cells or above your house. -
Hope to see this sometime this summer which does happen year with HP closeby or over us in July but for 3 weeks or so. http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/19...ea001198304.gif

As I feared too far north for anything exciting here now as winds are to stay at east/NE-ly then north as it`s much cooler the further north you go then showers lose the intensity, and all we`ve got here is low cloud/fog with outbreaks of moderate rain. http://www.xcweather.co.uk Hopeing the low cloud clears tomorrow but I have my doubts. The low is just tracking a little further south than shown yesterday just too far. if it was winter great. http://85.214.49.20/pics/brack0.gif http://85.214.49.20/wz/pics/Rmgfs274.gif Cooler than today even. South Wales looks good though for thundery showers.

Too much mid-level cloud cover today for thunder here did see the cumulus trying to reach up in the more clearer gaps which were few and far between but there was an impressive Tcu to the east early afternoon...had a heavy shower with much lighter showery rain, and it is much more humid to yesterday. I`m looking to friday for the best change for thundery heavy showers this week. http://85.214.49.20/wz/pics/Rtavn481.png http://85.214.49.20/wz/pics/Rtavn484.png

I thought I heard a couple of distant rumbles around that time also. Since my last post there were lots of large Tcu but they only went to a certain height as not into CB`s calvus which was odd. There`s a thickish layer of altocumulus come over from the SW since with 1 or 2 fair size Tcu making it look very dark with a little light rain here now.
