  1. No that was a greenland high. One of the best examples of a scandi high giving us cold was jan 87 in my lifetime anyway.. Example of scandi highs giving britain cold and us little would be jan 2013, se england getting a verygood cold spell the rest of us zilch was earll feb 2012 Examples
  2. Yes no point worrying about how much snow yet. I always think when it comes to things like this, get the cold in first then worry about the snow, which will often be a nowcast anyway. Maybe by Tues see what the shortt range models like the euro4 are showing with regards to snowfall.
  3. Hopefully heading to the dublin/wicklow hills on thursday, hoping to walk up to the highest point in the county of dublin, kippure summit 750m high. Should be nice and fresh up there on thursday.
  4. As bad as the winters have been recently, parts of up north havent done too bad with snow ,ok not exactly snowed in or anything but the best the country has done these last few yrs. Looks like the northwest will be in the firing line again. Not too confident i will see much but maybe i might be surprised.
  5. While parts of europe is getting some beastly cold ,the best we can do is get scraps . Later next week we will be getting a slush puppie, the excitement of it all lol.
  6. Yes the nw should get a fair number of snow showers and i will still watch with interest,it will should be the most intersting weather we have had so far this winter, probably wont see many showers myself. Still waiting for a proper arctic outbreak.........
  7. Just looks like a slushfest to me. The best we have been able to achieve these last few winters is pm air, surely we can do better. The wait for anything really proper goes on.
  8. Would have to be dec 2010,such a great month. Jan 82,Jan 79(i dont remember much about it ,only being 5 at the time). Jan 2010 wasnt bad either.
  9. Nothing like the rubbish we are getting here. The greeks have stolen another of our winters lol
  10. After all the hype and hope ,this winter has turned into a greek tragedy
  11. When we get to the end of this month all our hopes will probably be resting on feb to save our winter . Our hopes resting on feb to save us has been a common thing in recent yrs, only thing is recent febs have failed aswell.
  12. well one thing is for sure ,we wont be getting a cold spell the first half of this month. We have not had a proper cold spell during the second half of jan in ireland in yrs,so all hopes could be resting on feb to rescue this winter .
  13. It will be spring before we know it. Even saw some easter eggs in my local tesco store today lol.
  14. A belated happy new year to all. Hardly a cloud inthe sky today, lovely crisp day. Cold starry night, temp -0.3c,my 3rd airfrost of the winter yipeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Lol
  15. Time and time and time again over the last 20 to 30 yrs when we see the likes of greece gettng cold shots and western europe getting little or nothing, that usually the status quo remains for the entire winter.
  16. So looks like the latest gfs has now fallen more into line with the ukmo, bloody typical. Interesting to see what the ecm shows later.
  17. we have seen it happen many times in the past with potential for a decent cold spell when the ukmo goes againest the ecm and gfs and ends up being correct and then the ecm and gfs fall into line with it. Hopefully this wont be one of those occasions. Im cautiously optimistic.
  18. It is probably too good to be true given the background set up but maybe we could possibly get a toppler out of it which would be better then nothing. Still though it will be interesting to see what the models say tomorrow. p.s if you see in the morning that ido is the last poster on the mod thread that wont be good news
  19. Xmas day 84 I was 11 and during that Xmas we had stayed in a rented cottage in West Ireland right beside the Atlantic coast in County clare. It was the first Xmas day I had seen snow falling, there had been some wet snow showers there during the day more especially during the first half. The next and last time i saw snow falling on Xmas day was 20yrs later in 2004. The closest I came to have falling snow on Xmas day between 84 -04 was 2000, with any showers that day becoming more of a wintry nature as the evening arrived.
  20. More then likely the usual, the hp sinks and mild sw winds and rubbish are back.
  21. I think you could well be right. We will probably have to wait for solar min to get anything decent considering how our climate has changed. Hopefully by the early 2020s our winters will improve for cold prospects due to the sun because other then that our winters are probably as good as dead OVERALL regards proper cold spells etc imo
  22. Would have to be cold and dry with plenty of frost. I just love that weather, frost lasting all day in the shade etc.
