  1. From the album: Other Landscapes

Outside the grounds and not open to the public - it is still 'in use' by the family.
  2. From the album: Other Landscapes

A must see part of the grounds, approached by a gentle sloping terrace above the south lake.
  3. From the album: Other Landscapes

Only run for a few hours daily so don't be caught out if you want to see it working. It requires constant maintenance and suffered badly in recent rather severe cold spells but has been restored to full working order. http://www.castlehoward.co.uk/DB/Latest-News/Atlas-Fountain-Restoration.html
  4. From the album: Other Landscapes

The impressive obelisk sits on a small roundabout at the main entrance, with splendid avenues to approach from all sides. Erected in 1714, with two inscriptions added later, it commemorates the victories of the Duke of Marlborough and the architectural activities of the 3rd Earl of Carlisle.

    From the album: Other Landscapes

The house seen from across the South Lake. It's hard not to end up taking 'postcard' shots here, but the sky will always make your own image unique.
  6. The effect of even a slight breeze was well illustrated last night. It was almost calm until about 1am then a breeze picked up which lifted temperature from -0.6C to about 3C very rapidly.
  7. Looks like tonight will be the first air frost as we're on 0.6C now. Previous low was 1C, there have been at least four ground frosts.

Which renewables do you have in mind which work when it's cold, calm and demand is high. We will always need some other backup and if we can't burn coal or gas for the next 100 years then it will be nuclear I guess.

We do need to be practical unless planning to sit in the dark though. Gas is more efficient than coal or nuclear and can be fired up in minutes to meet demand surges. If we aren't going to be allowed to maximise extraction from our own gas fields we can always rely on import from Russia sp long as none of the other countries before us in the queue get it all. I think the issues with fracking have been greatly exaggerated to be honest and there is gas right under me now which I wouldn't be unduly concerned about them taking out. If the choice is several hundred windmills or a gas fracking project which is preferable then?

I'm surprised you think that seeing as the main alternatives for when the sun don't shine and the wind don't blow can't come near the efficiency of gas.
  11. 8.4C here today which is -1.5C. Considering the usual pattern is to start well above the month mean then slowly drop as autumn sets in, the potential is there for another notably below average month.

It is a bit like saying the summer was unusually mild in places due to clear skies and light winds from the south.
  13. I thought the slightly wetter than normal summer was being blamed on reduced Arctic ice last week.

Presumably the green CO2 alarmists. Why have the EU implemented legislation which will close perfectly good coal fired plants? Because they were poked into premature action by IPCC reports influenced by alarmist reports such as 20 metre sea level rises this century.

Why would anyone come out with such an alarmist statement unless they had an agenda to scare the public into accepting draconian energy related legislation? Which we have now got see news about coal fired power stations being closed with risk of power cuts.

20 metre sea level rises IS alarmist, sorry.

OK, I blame Americans (but it doesn't say F or C just degrees), but was 2006 hotter than the last 100,000 years? Various posters implied there were no alarmist predictions about sea level but there are plenty, in fact I think there was quite a competition to be as alarmist as possible for a while. Anyone could think they had an agenda.

  22. Dry and windy over here, last weeks rain may as well not have happened. It is very overcast though.
  23. It's been a good breezy drying day here and I'm quite surprised how quickly fields have dried off again.
  24. I think you might've forgot the favicon again. The new gallery layout is very nice.
