  1. For fair balance, you can study people to find possible causes of homosexuality providing you also study people to find possible causes of heterosexuality. If there is a cause of homosexuality there must be a cause of heterosexuality, surely? Just as a gay person may state 'i was born like that', so too could a straight person.
  2. If the low is further south, does that mean that any potential snow will be further south too?
  3. Wet and windy this afternoon, 12.5C.
  4. Butterflies! We had a couple of large queen wasps appear in the house this week, rather dopey but very much alive. That's about 6 we've had in the past month. Not sure where they come from, but they only seem to appear in 2 rooms which share a chimney flue. None of the other rooms ever get wasps in winter or early spring. Pretty cold here. not even any sign of the snowdrops yet.
  5. Happy New Year everyone. A dull, cloudy start to 2015. Temperature 10.2C. All very uninspiring.
  6. Looks like the MetO are still forecasting snow today and early tomorrow. Have been trying to find a decent webcam to see if it is snowing, but no luck so far (even though there must be dozens to chose from!).
  7. Those data are encouraging. My (very basic) understanding is that Arctic ice is about or below normal, and Antarctic ice is quite a lot above normal.
  8. Fingers crossed for Saturday. Temp here has fallen back to 3.8C. Very unexpected as MetO forecast have us at 7C all evening, and then rising.
  9. Frost all melted by lunchtime, though the ground underneath is still frozen. Temp now racing ahead, and up to 7C already. A toast to all fellow Midlanders for a cold and snowy 2015. Happy NY one and all!
  10. Thanks TM, got it! I had wondered if it was due to you being on a hill, but discounted it.
  11. Crikey, are you in a warm spot? You have the benefit of elevation too. Isn't that mysterious?
  12. Temperature just risen above freezing here, 0.5C. Still very frosty though. I do not understand how Solihull can be above freezing before Ludlow area since we are much further west. I maybe in a frost hollow, but even so ...
  13. What a suprise! Yet another hard frost with a low of -4.6C. Completely unexpected as I am so far west in the Midlands. Temperature still -3.1C now. Maybe the milder air. Is behind schedule?
  14. Oddly, we have had a colder day than yesterday, maxing out at 2.9C. Temp currently a little below -2C. The ice on the pond looks about 2 inches thick - pond is quite big too, about 5m diameter. An ominous looking cloud on the western horizon right now. I call that type of cloud a HOD - a harbinger of doom - as it generally signals bad weather (wet & windy). Yuk.
  15. Lovely shots there PM, thanks for posting. Was that filmed using a small remote flying machine?
  16. If the MetO are right, calm, cold sunny conditions may mean tons of frost and ice days. Here's hoping.
  17. A low of -7.1C, currently -5.2C. Cloud has come over, though it is broken. Very calm.
  18. I thought there was a potential snow event over this coming w/e, or maybe it has disappeared from the charts now? I think Frosty posted some snow charts yesterday or perhaps the day before.
  19. Maxed out at 4.3C today. Temp now dropped back to -2C. Should be plenty of frost tomorrow.
  20. I just noticed that we have ice on the inside of the windows in an unheated room downstairs. Temp now risen to -3.7C. Still wonderfully white everywhere including the hedges and trees. Good thick ice on pond this morning too. I don't think it thawed yesterday, so it almost certainly won't today.
  21. A beautiful fridgid-looking sky this morning and a very hard frost. Temperature currently -7.6C. Snowypwl9 don't take the station readings as an accurate reflection of temps everywhere. I am just 8 miles from Shobdon, but temps here on cold nights are a steady 3-4C less.
  22. Down to -6.2C. There's a real 'edge' to the cold which you don't get when it is 1 or 2 below. Lovely.
  23. I can believe that. We are down to -5.1C already!
  24. The arctic polar vortex is a semi-permanent weather feature that just happens to have its center near Baffin Island and Siberia. I'm not sure why it is baffin Island though, an interesting question. Does anyone else know why Baffin Island is home to the polar vortex on our side of the pole?
  25. Stunning photos everyone. I can see how sparkly and magical the hills and views must be. Temp plummeting here. Already down to -3.2C without any snow! Frost and ice on pond stayed all day. Looking like the lowest temp of 2014 coming up tonight.
