  1. ahh yes fond memories of Mr Crazysnowfan man - wonder what happened to him? His posts certainly made me chuckle too
  2. ..and some precipitation popping up on the radar out of no-where too - temps and dew points dropping rapid now and the wind has picked up. Lamp Post watching..
  3. mesmerizing though.. when the big flakes start falling hoping for more later / tomorrow - keep an eye on the Euro4 model it seems to be pretty accurate close range http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/cgi-bin/expertcharts?LANG=en&MENU=0000000000&CONT=euro&MODELL=euro4&MODELLTYP=1&VAR=prty&HH=6&BASE=-&WMO=&ZOOM=0 small 2.mov
  4. Nice thick heavy snow flakes here now.. started off as rain tho Looking on the radar it seems to be hit and miss as to rain or snow in the long line coming down from the north - so good luck to everyone south of here (-:
  5. Snow falling here - lots temp 3.8c DP +0.5 note to self - get a new weather station
  6. At present Wales is getting all the precipitation: http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/cgi-app/radar?CONT=ukuk&CREG=ukuk&LTYP=vie&LANG=en&STRUCTUR=_&W=0&L=0&SLP=0&ROAD=0&CITY=&LF=0&SUM=0&LOOP=1 ....patience will be a virtue for us -'later'
  7. This is spooky… I was just thinking its a shame that our street light doesn’t work and then a van pulled up and two Hertfordshire lighting operatives got out replaced the bulb in the lamp post !! lampost watching is back on then
  8. The apparent “fail†for forecasting what could have been a disaster for NY is ironic. It just goes to show that even in the USA forecasters interpretation of the models cannot guarantee they will be correct - no amount of money spent on modelling and super computers can ‘predict’ where snow will cause problems. A general area yes, maybe. New York city is a small part of New York state, the city is the hub and is densely populated with homes and businesses. I see no problem with calling the worst scenario… but the media ‘fail’ to recognise this as positive and also ‘fail’ to report anything outside NY City because it doesn’t make a story. My brother in-law moved out from his home in Long Island, back to a NY City apartment to escape the worst - Long Island has had it bad as well as many other places relatively nearby. Let this be a lesson, not for the forecasters but for those who expect the forecasters to be correct IMBY (in my back yard) - Forecasting snow is a prediction based on wisdom most of the time and no amount of money and computers can out-whit minuscule changes in nature at the last minute - Why do us humans expect so much? Yes it snowed, not as hard and where it was predicted - the same will happen time and time again… its like trying to warn where lightning will hit - Those blobs of snow on a BBC weather forecast will not be in exactly the same place when it actually falls… even if it were a big bulbous front passing over there might be rain instead of snow. It might snow here in the UK this week - its cold enough. but you might be a few miles away from the worst or the best. I like surprises like that - it's humbling (-:
  9. We all coped... and there were surprises - i agree it was fun I like surprises and there's still room for that despite all the technology available esp regarding snow - There's a fine line between cold drizzle and beautiful flakes falling from the sky and that's the magic. It's just that some folk believe they can predict it in their back yards or expect the Met folk to do it for us - no hope - it's like predicting a lightning strike. 'Its going to be cold, maybe wet, maybe both with some frost at night but the wind is from the north-ish' There's plenty more surprises despite the tech (-:
  10. Thanks Yamkin - loved your enthusiastic posts over the years - all good fun Video done on mobile yes..
  11. managed to video our first snow on phone - sooo pwitteee First snow170114.MOV
  12. Snowing here for the last half hour - settling too - I like surprises looks like a line of it coming on the radar -
  13. Hi Everyone.. I'd like to share a link i have that enables you to see what "has been" in terms of cloud cover and also infra red - a kind of guess at where the weathers going next - Speed up the animation & it's quite hypnotic Maybe we'll be able to see 'that low' in the bay of biscay going north or south to affect our chances of colder air over our region.. - what ever happens have fun out there here: http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/weather/satellite/Europe/Europe/Infraredcolor/premium.htm
  14. keep and eye on this: http://en.vedur.is/weather/forecasts/atlantic/#type=temp
  15. I only come on here in winter to find out if there's some snow coming - and in the summer to find out if there's thunderstorms - each are as impossible to predict in one's own back yard but chasing the potential is fun. Not interested in a moaning thread (there's enough of that in this world) - just want to judge for myself from the opinions of seasoned NW watchers... Commenting and predicting the weather is most definitely part of life here in the UK on our small Island, it's part of our national vocabulary. The model discussion thread is and always has been a volatile place for opinions - I like it that way. To sort the wheat from the chaff is a skill learnt over time both from the posts on forums and model watching what ever level you think you are at. Keep the model discussion thread the way it is - just delete the one liners occasionally (-:
  16. ^Ignorance is sometimes bliss! Welcome to the mad world of weather 'ciel' - great atmospheric first post photo. Rest assured that here on NetWeather enthusiasm for the weather and all that it brings is just what you need
  17. Been following Jón Frímann’s blog: http://www.jonfr.com/volcano/?author=2 for a few weeks and someone has posted a great link which shows Bárðarbunga activity on one page: http://weerstationlangerak.nl/bardarbunga/ thought it would be nice to share.. apologies if this has been already posted in this thread
  18. I believe this is the same volcano? filmed at ground level
  19. http://davemcgarvie.wordpress.com/2014/09/07/so-what-if-there-was-an-eruption-at-the-bardarbunga-caldera/ Hope this hasn't already been posted.. just found a very good read - not very long but understandable
  20. got quite excited in the last half hour.. Standing under the porch with camera in hand (on video) eagerly waiting for that perfect shot of lightning hitting a tree or something... all looking good on the radar & heading for us then as the storm got closer, a light rain shower! ...not a sausage, a rumble or big clack , just wet and cold )-: Oh well so much for living on a hill - maybe next time? Good fun this weather, u never know exactly where and when it will happen as you expect it (-; edit: even with all the tech/radar and info available
  21. Looking at radar, listening to thunder every 30 secs.. I reckon we've got about 10 mins till a band heading east hits us..camera at the ready computer about to be turned off just in case
  22. Just found these ol' bookmarks too: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/eumet/neatl/flash-wv.html http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/eumet/neatl/flash-ir2.html http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/imagery/neatl.html might be useful (-:
  23. North of Guernsey, south of Weymouth - in the English Channel (-;
  24. I often wander in my small and insignificant world whether in a time past, beyond our comprehension that Mars supported intelligent life… Maybe one day a probe would find evidence of it and it's demise. Perhaps watching 'Planet of the apes' too many times was a mistake but it's a nice thought as an earth dweller to take care of home a bit more… but i guess most folk don't care anyway so it doesn't matter what may or may not have happened in the past.
