More of the same today sun sun and more sun

Winter hill fire now a major emergency with the 2 separate fires merging into one. The smoke blowing across the M61 and over Chorley totally blocks out the sun, a bit eerie really.

Almost 350 firefighters from across the north are now involved in fighting the fires on Winter Hill and Saddleworth Moor and it looks like the Army may be brought in to help with the Winter Hill fire.

just hope to god that there aren’t any more incidents until these are brought fully under control although somehow I think it’s going to get worse before it gets better.

  2. Just under 27c here now so could be looking at 30c max later this afternoon which would be the third time this week, truly exceptional conditions for my part of the region and altitude.

other than that though fantastic conditions although the dryness is getting worrying and we’re probably looking at the last couple of days before the hosepipe ban comes in.

  3. Whatever they thought it would do, it didn’t as what used to be a surface of clippings is now a black oily mess.

it’ll teach Lancs CC not to buy road surfacing materials from pound shops.

at least it got shut of all the grit left from last winter when it was obviously to cold to venture out.

  4. According to United Utilities, reservoir levels in the Pennines are about 60%, not desperately low but down on an average year and given the forecast of more warm weather and little sign of rain i’d Imagine a hosepipe ban could be on the cards for North West England later in the summer.

still a far cry from 1976, 1984 and 1995 though.

A very sunny May followed by a very sunny June. It's been a long time since we had such an extended sunny period as this.

Incidentally February was a sunny month as well.

Yes and both ended with an easterly although if my memory serves me correctly, the February one was a bit on the coolish side.

fantastic days weather today, for those like me who like it warm and sunny.

Just finished after a full day working in the garden fitting decking and my back is certainly feeling it now along with a sunburned neck although that’s my fault for once again underestimating the strength of the sun at this time of year.

Can’t get a satellite signal on my tv that usually happens before a storm but just had rain no thunder or lightening

Ours went off during that storm a couple of Fridays back.

no Corry or Emmerdale on record so they had to watch it in real time, adverts and all.

now that’s what I call some serious weather conditions

  7. Lovely journey down through the Yorkshire Dales today,

stopped at Aysgarth falls and then Wensleydale Creamery before calling for a bit of something to eat at a pub on the tops between Haworth and Hebden Bridge.

sunshine throughout and temperatures on the car showing into the mid 20’s

    whats not to like.

Was this the storm that hit Rochdale as well? My mate from there still goes on about that particular one as one of the worst he's seen and he has travelled to a fair few places. He also mentioned some particularly large hail associated with the storm.

July 2006 was a glorious month, I went to Norfolk broads on holiday later on in that month and there was some impressive storms, one I remember at sunset which turned the lightning red.

Also went to the broads on holiday in August 2001 I think and saw some very impressive lightning displays then.

    Probably was.

i live about 7 miles north of Rochdale and we got over 60mm of rain in the space of a couple of hours from this storm with quite a bit of flooding.

don’t remember the thunder and lightening being that excessive though although I was probably to busy mopping out the conservatory that briefly became an indoor paddling pool.

the best storm I can remember here was in July 1975 with some serious flooding after over 50mm fell in 45 minutes along with violent lightening and constant thunder.

three miles down the valley hardly a drop of rain fell but the river was overtopping it’s banks in bright sunshine.

  9. Fantastic days weather.

A few jobs done in the garden, a couple of hours sat out in the sun and now a couple of bottles of real ale to help wash down my tea.

And with the next few days looking settled it’s just a shame it’s back inside at work but at least at this time of year we are approaching maximum daylight so no excuse for not enjoy what’s left of the day.

I guess there are other areas of the country that have localised winds although not as prevalent as the Helm.In this area of the Pennines in summer we tend to get a lot of days that are fairly calm at both ends of the day but can be really quite windy on the hilltops in the afternoon, another world to the calm conditions in the valley just 3 miles down the hill. There is also a farm that I know of called 'Helm' but it is half way down the valley and I don't really recall it being a particularly windy spot.

I live just over into Lancashire from the Todmorden end of the Calder Valley and sometimes in spring and summer we get a strong and very gusty wind from the Yorkshire side of the ridge that can last for a couple of days with little more than a leaf rustler a couple of miles away.

only last spring I had a couple of fence panels blown out on a day when wind was never mentioned in the forecast.
