Continuous light-moderate snow all night and moderate falling and drifting snow as I write.

Average undrifted depth is 19.6cm, drifts commonly to 1 metre, deepest I saw whilst doing the met' readings was 1.8m.

Temp' currently -0.5c.

about 3 cms in West Bromwich and still falling, though it appears to be melting now despite it still snowing.

Warnings of further snow this afternoon so it may get thicker again. Raods arent very good

Terminal, are these met readings for snow on a public site? If so, where at?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

No, not a public site Paul. It's my own station, I've kept records since 1963 with met' office standard equipment and procedures.

Wow, I bet you have some interesting archives.

Certainly have, especially from the really good winters like 1969,1979,1986 etc. Not the thread to go into them now though so I'd better get back on topic. Heaviest snow of the whole event falling at present, continuous drifting, mean depth now around 21cm.

Ive just ventured out to get some photos, but i had to turn back very quickly. At 500ft there is very little snow.but within minutes in the car the conditions deteriorated so bad that at 800ft it was a complete white out with heavy drifting snow.Yesterday the drifting was quite bad but today it is far worse,in some places the drifts go completely over the top of the walls.

Regards.

Have to say that the melt down in Airedale today has been surprising. The valley floor, around 250', is now green, but no more than a couple of miles away up here at 900' there's still a level 12cm, though this is about 4cm down on this morning. The evaporation and "blow-off" today has been spectacular, even with temps not far above freezing.

Average depth 22.5cm at 0900 today. 1cm of fresh snow this morning but the existing layer is compacting slowly.

9am today, 6cm average depth of what is now becoming patchy cover. Grass starting to show under trees, near warm houses, a few pavements now bare.

We have had lying snow at 9am for a full week, only the first days snowfall thawed completely before snow came again.

WHITSTABLE, KENT. 6 Hours of snow, still falling 3" and expect snow for another 2 hours according to radar. I saw this happening at 11.00 and why did the Met Office not issue a warning I ask until 4.30am, You could see it like a freight train heading for Kent. Most snow fall in this town since 1980's. :)
