Tropical Storm Warnings for North Carolina as Arthur Heads North

Tropical Storm warnings are up for the coast of North Carolina as Tropical Storm Arthur heads north at 7 mph. The heaviest weather associated with Arthur is on its east and south sides, and a buoy 128 miles east of Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Arthur's east side, recorded sustained winds of 47 mph, gusting to 60 mph at 6:50 am EDT on Wednesday. Significant wave heights at the buoy were an impressive 17.4' this morning. Radar out of Melbourne, Florida on Wednesday morning showed that Arthur had built about 1/2 of an eyewall, on the northeast to southwest side of the center. Bands of heavy rain were affecting the east coast of Florida near Cape Canaveral Wednesday morning, but rainfall amounts from the storm have generally been less than one inch over Florida. Satellite loops on Wednesday morning showed a slow but steady increase in the intensity and areal coverage of Arthur's heavy thunderstorms, with the potential beginning of a Central Dense Overcast (CDO) of high cirrus clouds forming on the east side of the center. A CDO is a classic sign of an intensifying tropical storm that is approaching hurricane strength. However, the visible satellite loops also showed signs that Arthur is struggling with dry air. Arc-shaped bands of low cumulus clouds were racing away from the storm to the north of the center, indicating that dry air had gotten ingested into Arthur's heavy thunderstorms, creating strong downdrafts that were spreading out along the ocean surface. This process robs a tropical storm of moisture and energy, and means that Arthur has considerable work to do in order to moisten its environment before the storm can close off an eyewall and attain hurricane strength. The clockwise circulation of an upper level high pressure over Florida was bringing northerly winds over Arthur at high altitude, and these winds were creating light wind shear of 5 - 10 knots. Water vapor satellite loops showed dry air to the north and west of Arthur.

Fairbanks sees 1/4 of average annual rainfall in 24 hours

FAIRBANKS -- After two days, this is already the 12th rainiest July in the history of Fairbanks.

For the third time in two weeks, a rainstorm laden with moisture from the eastern Gulf of Alaska drenched the Fairbanks area Tuesday and early Wednesday, dumping more than 3 inches of rain. Over the last two weeks, Fairbanks has received about half of its average annual rainfall, one of the wettest stretches since Felix Pedro discovered gold in 1902. During a 24-hour period Tuesday and Wednesday, about one-quarter of the average annual rainfall fell.

Heat wave hits record highs across B.C. but hinders fire-suppression efforts

A provincewide heat wave in B.C. is expected to hit record highs in the coming days, heightening concerns about wildfires.

Environment Canada says record-high temperatures, compared to July 12 and 13 in previous years, have been measured in several communities, with a possibility of more to come.

Among the records broken were 41.1 C in Lytton (previous record for July 13 was 40 C in 1961), Osoyoos, 40 C (37.7 C, 1996), Pemberton, 39.9 C (37.5 C, 2012), Princeton, 37.7 C (34 C, 1996) and West Vancouver, 32 C (29.3 C, 1996).

My parents arrived in Vancouver yesterday. They left Sydney at 10:20am Sunday and arrived in Vancouver at 7:30am Sunday (that's not a typo).

They flew direct from Sydney to Vancouver on Air Canada. They hit three areas of decent turbulence. Notably, one patch near Hawaii and the flight path was diverted slightly, and another patch roughly halfway between Hawaii and Vancouver.

They arrived in a damp, misty/drizzly Vancouver. Walked about the city centre, including checking out Canada Place. A cool to mild but comfortable day (I see it got to 19.2ºC yesterday at Vancouver Airport, which is actually a typical July max temp here). They stayed at the Fairmont Hotel last night.

I spoke to them about an hour ago, and they board the Norwegian Sun (cruise ship) at Canada Place in a few hours. The ship will take them on an Alaskan cruise. Tomorrow (Jul 22) they cruise through the 'Inside Passage' to Ketchikan (Jul 23), Juneau (Jul 24), Skagway (Jul 25), cruise Glacier Bay (Jul 26), cruise Hubbard Glacier (Jul 27), Anchorage (Jul 28), cruise Hubbard Glacier (Jul 29), Icy Strait Point (Jul 30), cruise Sawyer Glacier (Jul 31), Juneau (Jul 31), Skagway (Aug 01), Ketchikan (Aug 02), cruise 'Inside Passage' (Aug 03), and arrive back in Vancouver in the morning (Aug 04). :)

28504 low records set in the USA over the last 365 days ,compared with only 13205 max records broken ,so USA has had a pretty cold year according To NOAA Posted Image
