What could become the biggest heat wave of the year for much of the eastern part of the country is gaining strength today. Urban parts of the St. Louis metro area, including Ferguson, Missouri, are expected to bear the brunt of it.

Forecast shows a blast of winter entering parts of southern Canada early next week. A major temperature drop forecast for Calgary from a high of 24 degrees to just 2 degrees in the space of 48 hours with light snow predicted, all thanks to a low pressure system moving down from the north and winds thereafter from the N/NE.

Always good to see the first snowfalls predicted for northern hemisphere cities.

I remember something similar happening in 2010, only for a very mild period to occur thereafter well into latter part of October, I was in Calgary on 20th Oct 2010 and it was a warm day with maxima of 20 degrees, not long after winter truly swept in.

Special weather statement in effect for:

  • City of Calgary

First snowfall of the season possible on Monday.

Summer will remain for one more day in Southern Alberta before an intense cold front moves through on Monday.

This cold front is currently producing rain over Northern Alberta. However, for many areas of Western Alberta an unseasonably cold Arctic airmass will cause rain to change to snow on Monday. Current guidance suggests over 5 centimetres of snow is possible for these regions.

The public is advised to monitor future forecasts and warnings as warnings may be required or extended.

Please monitor the latest forecasts and warnings from Environment Canada at www.weatheroffice.gc.ca.

would have loved to have seen this...feel like im missing out a bit...Alberta seems to be the home of unusual weather...although snow in early September isn't that rare happens about once every 5 years or so.

Maybe that's what the MetO GLOSEA model is picking up on over this side of the pond for this winter. :(

After the very cold spell in early September, there's been some record breaking heat in the Northern US and Canadian High plains in the last week of September. Extracts below from Weather Underground posted Sept 26th:

Record Fall Heat in the U.S. and Canadian High Plains

Temperatures on Thursday and Friday, September 25-26, soared to record levels for this time of the year in Montana, Wyoming, western North Dakota, and the south-central Canadian Plains.

....The hottest reading observed was 98°F (36.7°C) at Terry, Montana and also at Wasta, South Dakota..... their hottest temperatures ever observed during the fall (post September 22nd) and for so late in the year.

....In Canada, Esteven, Saskatchewan hit 34.3°C (93.7°F) and Brandon, Manitoba 34.0°C (93.2°F). Both sites are near 50°N latitude so it goes without saying that these were the warmest temperatures ever observed for so late in the year at those sites.

....The 90°F (32.2°C) isotherm pushed as far north as Swan River, Manitoba (52° 07’ N) where on Friday, September 26th 35.1° (95.2°F) was observed. This may be the hottest temperature ever measured so far north so late in the year on the North American continent.

This year North America is certainly demonstrating it has a wide variety of weather in September as it moves from summer to winter. This year from early month cold to record breaking heat in the plains on 25th/26th September and finally the start of winter cold descending on the Rockies at the end of the month. Here's a wonderful photo of Vail on 30th Sept 2014 showing the colours of Autumn and early season snowfall:

Peaceful, warm and rainy in Hawaii but there are some serious storm warning for south-eastern states. Louisiana looks to get hit the most. How are you guys holding up? How bad is it?

Great lakes upto 6 degrees cooler than last year and 3 degrees cooler than long term average. Will be interesting to see if we have early ice growth this year

AccuWeather issued their US Winter Forecast today:

US Winter Forecast: Cold, Snow to Seize Northeast; Wintry Blasts to Slick South

Though parts of the Northeast and mid-Atlantic had a gradual introduction to fall, winter will arrive without delay. Cold air and high snow amounts will define the season.

Farther south, ice storms and snow events will threaten the Tennessee Valley and parts of the southern Plains. Much of the South can prepare for a wet winter, with some severe weather encroaching on Florida.

The northern Plains will be somewhat inconsistent with variable, back-and-forth temperatures and below-normal snowfall. Meanwhile, the drought will persist in the Northwest and northern California and ease slightly farther south.
