SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING - SOUTHEAST QUEENSLAND

for LARGE HAILSTONES, DESTRUCTIVE WIND, VERY HEAVY RAINFALL, and a possible TORNADO

For people in parts of the

Southeast Coast,

Eastern Darling Downs & Granite Belt and

Wide Bay & Burnett Forecast Districts.

Issued at 5:04 PM Friday, 26 January 2007.

THIS INCLUDES A TORNADO WARNING.

At 5:05 PM , Bureau of Meteorology weather radar detected severe thunderstorms near Laidley, Dalby, the area northeast of Dalby and the area north of Dalby. These thunderstorms are moving towards the north to northeast. Severe thunderstorms are forecast to affect Bunya Mountains and Marburg by 5:35 PM and the area west of Kingaroy, Fernvale, the area south of Esk and southern Lake Wivenhoe by 6:05 PM .

Tornadoes, large hailstones, destructive winds and very heavy rainfall are possible.

A more general severe thunderstorm warning is also current for the Central Highlands & Coalfields and parts of the Central West, Wide Bay & Burnett, Darling Downs & Granite Belt and Southeast Coast Forecast Districts.

NOTE A TORNADO HAS BEEN SIGHTED IN THE LAIDLEY AREA. PEOPLE IN THE PATH OF THIS STORM BETWEEN LAIDLEY AND THE COMINYA AND LOWOOD AREAS SHOULD SEEK SHELTER INDOORS.

Two tornado thunderstorms reported near Laidley and W of Grafton today, those thunderstorms are expected to be dangerous. 150km/hr winds reported from Laidley area this afternoon. In force of major populated areas in Northern River may prepare of incoming tornado storm from the south.

The sky turned green! It going nastier here now. Getting gusty here now from the SW. Two storms collding in some place from SW. Looks like going to get main core here at Lismore!

Here some photos on the 15th Jan. Main hail core missed us and it was closet ever in years! Hail up to 3cm reported near Lennox Head which is only 5km north of us!

Severe thunderstorms may produce large hailstones, damaging winds and/or very heavy rainfall in the warning area over the next several hours. Hail, very heavy rainfall and damaging winds are more likely in the Northern Rivers district, whereas damaging wind only is more of a risk in the remainder of the warning area.

Major locations within the warning area include Lismore, Grafton, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Taree and Kempsey.

We had 55mph winds here after 10pm from strong SE change. Alot of lightning in distance. Thunderstorms coming back on Tuesday! Bring it on more storms! My past 2 days reports will be on site very soon!

EDIT: Yes that was a supercell. Very intense thunderstorm.

Damaging winds gust up to 120km/hr reported on Summerland Way from this thunderstorm. 6cm hail reported and 56.3mm of rain in 34mins at Ullmarra north of Grafton. This thunderstorm potentially moving NE towards Ballina and Lismore districts, serious damage may occur.

Holy smokes by the radar, looking very huge and it coming right this way!

Hey it's Wollongong. Yes well weather over there is not stormy as much than here. Northern Rivers is located just south of border which is south of Brisbane. Good location where you can storm chasing in australia.

TROPICAL CYCLONE ADVICE NUMBER 34

Issued at 2:07pm on Tuesday the 6th of February 2007

A Cyclone WARNING is now current for coastal and island communities from

Mornington Island to Pormpuraaw.

At 1:00 pm EST [12:30 pm CST] Tropical Cyclone Nelson, Category 1 with central

pressure 990 hectopascals, was centred near latitude 16.0 south and longitude

140.0 east which is 115 kilometres northeast of Mornington Is and 185 kilometres

north northwest of Karumba.

The cyclone is moving east at about 20 km/h.

Tropical Cyclone Nelson is expected to move east-southeast while intensifying.

It may cross the coast between KOWANYAMA and KARUMBA on Wednesday morning.

GALES may develop on Mornington Island this afternoon and on the mainland coast

between Mornington Island and Pormpuraaw overnight.

As the cyclone crosses the coast, large waves may produce minor flooding along

the foreshore between Pormpuraaw and Gilbert River. People living in areas

likely to be affected by this flooding should take measures to protect their

property as much as possible and be prepared to help their neighbours.

Tropical cyclone Nelson will bring gales and flooding rain towards Cairns region tomorrow afternoon, winds up to 150km/hr are likely. But this system will weaken as it goes over the land and then will be likely to re build over the Coral Sea offshore Cairns. Afterwards, TC Nelson will be potentially dangerous for along QLD coast due to this system may be moving SSE parallel to the coast.

6th-10pm: 985hpa 140km/hr

7th-10pm: 1001hpa 78km/hr

8th-10pm: 986hpa 167km/hr

9th-10pm: 965hoa 210km/hr

10th-10pm: 913hpa 330km/hr

Few showers and storms have formed on radar and heading north to northeast direction. They are expected to be severe. It very warm, muggy and cloudy here now. Looking forward to the storms this arvo!

Very intense storms all over NE NSW right now! Most storms having winds over 100km/hr with 5cm and over hailstones! Those storm cells are very severe! The STW didn't issue for it our area yet but intense cells in our way right now! We are under hueg massive black RFB clouds! Very warm and muggy still!

Have been alot of rain and heat lately. Temperatures knocked to 30's yesterday unexpected! Today going to be similar but more rain. MJO phrase is in 2 now with approaching La Nina. Hopefully next cyclone by late Feb and early March.

Thanks SH for all the updates, it might seem no one cares as your the only one that seems to be posting but I'm all sure we all appreciate your efforts!

I find it interesting about how much severe weather you get over there, obviously the big weather news is nearly always from the States, but you seem to get it just as good (or bad!).
