Thank you for that, Reef, that's interesting.

I wonder how long it will be before that record falls by moving to February - or even (dare I mention it) January?

You know you spend too much time on netweather when....

You have nightmares about 23C in Britain in February!

I had a dream about it being 24c in Feb only last week. It certainly wasn't a nightmare however! :)

I'm looking at around 21st March.

Back in March 1965 I believe, the temperature hit 28 degrees C from a starting point of below freezing. I reckon we might get something similar in the March ahead, though with what this would do to the already abundant potholes out there, it will cost me a fortune for repairs to the tyres on my cars!!!

There was a range of temperature spanning 28C in East Anglia but it certinaly didn't actually get anywhere near 28C.

March 1st could give this a run for its money, strong and warm westerly winds, somewhere on the east or even south coast with a slight north or due west component? I feel it will be 19.5 or 20, but worth watching. If the system would speed up slightly, even the 29th of Feb quite mild now across the southwest.

I'm going to call for the 25th March, i expect the later third of March to have some notably high maxima...

At this time of year, we are really looking for the 8C isotherm at least, so i can say that it is extremely unlikely to occur before the 13th March given current ensemble output.

Given that we've been seeing temperatures above 16C in recent days, and with the sun rising fast in the sky day by day I thought it might be an appropriate time for people to give their predictions for the first 70F (21C) of the year in the UK. If you like you can predict location too.

I'll start with March 18th. The Home Counties look a good bet :)

21C now seems an even more distant possibility than it did a month ago :o Oh the weird British seasons, don't you love 'em? :o

No doubt that post Easter (Equinox) and as the clocks go onto BST a week later we will see some of the first spring weather arrive on our shores. In the mean time we can enjoy some proper late winter weather before that warm spring & roasting summer arrive ;)

We might see 70F+ this April even though i'm going for a below average April even below average Aprils can see the odd warm day here and there like in April 2001 which recorded 70F on the 2nd i think and was a cold month overall with cold northerly winds dominating, remember you can record 70F+ one day then wintry showers the next in the spring, spring is a topsy turvy season.

I'm going to say sometime during last week of April.

Don't foresee any real warm weather occuring before then, i think height rises to the north will be a theme for the next few weeks, low pressure will take a more southerly track so we won't see any southerly airstream plumes.

With Northern Blocking looking like the dominant pattern, once we have got this week out of the way, (I don't expect 21ºC to be reached) it appears that we may have to wait a few more weeks before the chance of hitting 70ºF returns.

What is the latest date that this figure has been reached?

Even if we get this horrible cold snap for the next two weeks things can change very quickly in April and 21C is certainly a possibility for the last week, hopefully. I remember back to April 2003 which had a cold and dismal start but by mid month temperatures up to 28C I remember moving house From Berkshire to Derbyshire and it was 26*C , a hot day, and I think the date was 16th. Obivously this isn't going to be happening any time the next two weeks but don't rule it out for the final couple weeks.

I would say the 26th. The second half of April is more likely to produce a warm spell and it's a Saturday and I'm working overtime so it's inevitable that it will be a warm one.

Still sticking with the thoughts I expressed above, i.e. not till late April at the earliest.

Out of interest what's the latest date 70°F has been reached for the first time?

Actually there's an outside chance on Thursday or Friday this week. Unlikely it's true, but those two days could throw up some real warmth in favoured spots. 65C (18C) certainly likely, and it may well push closer towards 70F somewhere.

Then it looks like all downhill from there with the northerly retrogressing high and easterlies / north-easterlies. Why oh why didn't it do this three months ago, instead of this complete waste of time?
