I think that's because it wasn't felt as far south as Kent, although I could be wrong...

Wrong!

It was quite subtle (A few rattles and definite trembling of my bed) but still enough for me to freak out a little to text everyone.

Also, Meridian News have said that people in Maidstone, Ashford and Gillingham have emailed in to say they felt it to. :cold:

Aren't dogs supposed to be very sensitive to earthquakes ?
Well Billy was certainly upset by the whole event. The site of a chimney on the pavement in Market Rasen this morning has really affected him.

Ignore me...I'm just jealous.

Tsk...Do I sense a tone of sarcasm Mr OON? I mean, theres nothing like an earthquake to revitalize that good ol' community spirit of yesteryear *snigger*

I notice there was an aftershock of 1.8 about 3hrs later.

hmm, there was.

I won't forget the noise. That was very freaky.

Wish I had a camera as there was a succession of bedroom lights coming on, kinda like on the movies.

Nothing felt by myself, although I'm yet to log onto my local forum to see if anyone felt it.

My brother was woken where he lives near Sheffiled and my girlfriend likewise near Gloucester - there are a few cracks in her house!

I can understand your 'pain' OON. :cold:

We had always hoped to experience a MILD earthquake .. the nearest we'd gotten

before was on an 'earthquake experience machine' at London's geological museum

many years ago.

I suppose it would have been more exciting if it had come during the daytime,

but then more folks might have been hurt ..

Doubt I'll ever experience another of such magnitude, being er, well middle aged (?) lol.

Lol, a few Chimey pots fell over. I work it out as very roughly 40,000 times less powerful than the Sumatra earthquake in 2004.

Geologically notable for the UK though.

Yikes, as much difference as that is it.

Certainly puts our wee shake into perspective and reveals why there was

such devastation there.

well not if you live close to the strongest part. UK houses are not built for 'quakes. nor is our infrastructure. plus a lot of people are probably scared silly (elderly, etc)....

Your thoughts are kind, but depressingly ageist, Mick. Do we really think the elderly would be more likely to be scared - many of them lived through the Blitz, for chrissake?! In fact - as a getting-on-for-60 year old - I am amazed at the whimpering from a few of the youngsters on here...."freaked out", "never been as scared in my life", "shaking like a leaf", "scared as hell" etc etc.

A website of people dedicated to the observation and enjoyment of natural phenomena should be made of sterner stuff !!

Another thing was that I was talking to someone on MSN in Lancashire literally seconds after the quake. A few mins after it passed through here, he felt it.

That was very freaky.

PS, my grandparents live in Sutton On Sea and slept through it.

This pie chart never fails to shock me. The three biggest earthquakes of the last century account for almost half of the total seismic moment of all the last 100 year's earthquakes.

As amazing as it may seem to you, some of the 'youngsters' on here don't immediatly think 'Earthquake!' when the ground starts moving, so let us be freaked out/scared! As I'm sure you know, Quakes aren't exactly common in the UK so when it's 1am in the morning in the dead of the night at things start rattling on your shelf then I think we can be forgiven for being a little uneasy!

Earthquakes in England are rare events, while in Sicily happen frequently.

However, my italian friend who lives in Exeter, said me that he didn't feel it. Perhaps, he was too distant!

I was in Italy during the Summer of 1996. There was an earthquake overnight there - I slept through that one too

My 1st thought also !!

We've had few "happenings" of late (house built in 1642) I thought our "Old Man" (as my daughters call him/it) had decided to give my bed a shake again.

My dog was unusually bouncy also last night, she wouldn't settle at all.

Thanks J.H.! though the spell check is a wonderful thing you do need to know your basics...................unless ,of course, he meant the actual position of the chimney..........
