Early season snow at Mt Hutt, Canterbury just a few days ago. (from Nzski.com)

This is usually the first ski resort to open in the Southern Hemisphere. Perhaps late May or early June.

Current predicted maxima for the next few days are 12C with overnight lows above freezing and NW conditions. Forecasts are for 1600m ASL.

Sleet for most of the day(kilmarnock) temporarily turned to snow at the top end of town. Went for a drive and snow is settling down to about 100m at a guess but it was starting to turn back to rain there.

Had heavy hail showers here one after another for quite some time.

Now wet snow mixed in heavier downpours.

Snowing like billio here in Serre Chevalier. Heavy rain in the valley last night - when we skied in at 5pmyesterday it was 17c locally! - but around 20-30cm on the upper slopes. Never skied on such a variety of piste in one day before. Even the pistes were off-piste for the first couple of hours. Moderate snow all afternoon, and as we toured the village on what passes locally for efficient skier transport back to the village centre the sleet was turning to snow even here at 1400m. I suspect a cracking few days to come. Might post a piccy later. Alternatively I might go visit some local bars.Happy days. Doubtless it's raini in the uk. Maybe serre-che should twin with Telford.
