Major Hurricane Ike

Feeder roads are flooding now in western Galveston where there is little in the way of protection.

The best thing we can hope for is the system takes a slight jog to the east however in truth all that will do is shunt the 20-30ft surge eastwards but either way this is going to cause huge damage.

Day time heating along with a defined eye will intensify this a bit although it looks a bit thin on its north west quadrant so it might make Cat 3.

Picture from teh NHC Site Here

Looks pretty rough in the south east quadrant. The size of the storm and the shape of the Gulf will intensify any storm surge I think. Could be bad news for any oil refining and so oil prices as well.

Crude oil prices have risen slightly with the threat of Ike to $102 a barrel, but the main

concern to the Americans is the price of gasoline as Texas refines about 25% of all

America's gasoline.

The rising water prior to the arrival of the hurricane force winds was a major cause of deaths in the 1900 storm - now (9/12/2008 10:30 CDT) at the seawall GPST2 showing only winds NNE at 15 knts (gusts to 23), but with 8 feet of extra water.

Water would soon be too high to move on most of the island.

was watching one of the news feeds posted on here earlier. Emergency services were trying to persuade some folk to leave, but they wouldn't have it - that's their last chance. Some other guy was saying he's staying put because he lives on high ground. One of the news men said 'high ground' just meant the house was on stilts! Judging by some of the images already, 20ft+ on top and the waves too, wow - major disaster.

Police chief visited the guys staying on surfside and asked them to tie I.D. to property and themselves to make their job identifying things easier when they come back after the storm. Basically the police are now leaving surfside.

Some MAJOR intensification in the winds.

Flight speeds upto 123Kts.

Certainly a CAT 3 and growing at a pace.
