Hi GW

Yes - did you see those who are staying :o in Galveston!!!!!!... jeez dumb or brave, I'm not sure which. If you look at KW's link, I'd be gone, and quickly.....

Hoggy

They say they "can't afford to leave....." ????? The lady with the 12month old baby needs to get things into perspective surely?

EDIT: Where's Calrisian???

Galveston cams

The Spot restaurant located at 32nd and Seawall:

Lining over seven miles of beaches, the Seawall, which is 17 feet high, was built to protect the island from tidal surges and hurricane force winds. The Seawall began as a tremendous grade raising project and now extends 54,790 feet, one-third of Galveston's Gulf of Mexico frontage:

The Harbor Cam is located atop the Harbor House hotel, Pier 19:

Was in the dominican republic over the last 2 weeks. Survived TS HANNA, Thunder lightening and rain like ive never seen before, As for ike.... let me tell you about ike...... Just to let you know how powerful it was just of the coast of the dominican coast, the sea swells were huge. Its a third world country as far as im concerned, so pictures of devastation look bad , because they live in badly built homes made of corrogated iron and timber. But the flooding was truly amazing. If it happened here, just the thoughts of it :o

Thanks for the surge link Kold, if that's correct I would have thought that the water would flood in from behind the isle, also on top of that you have the wave height another 10-20 ft at least.

As I say if that's correct then the figure below for the bay near Houston could be very serious (20ft flood surge into the Houston suburbs....)

Large inner eye forming within Ike , a whole range of 958-955 pressures confirms this, the eye will probably be quite large when/if it forms before landfall.

Sustained winds in excess of 93knots 172 km/h still at station 42361. (at 122m AMSL)

Pressure now down to 970hPa and still falling rapidly.

Wind Direction (WDIR): NE ( 40 deg true )

Wind Speed (WSPD): 48.0 m/s

Atmospheric Pressure (PRES): 970.8 mb

Air Temperature (ATMP): 27.0 °C

Dew Point (DEWP): 24.0 °C

Heat Index (HEAT): 30.1 °C

99.1knots now! (183kmh or 112mph) wow, that is a lot quicker than I would have thought even at 122m AMSL

Wind Direction (WDIR): NE ( 50 deg true )

Wind Speed (WSPD): 51.0 m/s

Atmospheric Pressure (PRES): 970.2 mb

Air Temperature (ATMP): 26.0 °C

Dew Point (DEWP): 24.0 °C

Heat Index (HEAT): 28.0 °C

Thats a stronger wind than I think anybody would have thought opplevelse.

It seems that something has happened to allow these strong winds to get closer to the surface (Maybe the collapse of the inner core).

This is bad news and might make Ike a CAT 3 at 95Kt. Bloody hell. Makes my estimate of a CAT 1 look way off.

Finally some good sat passes so we can get some internal info. Quite an extraordinary internal structure. I've not seen anything like it before (note in particular the bottom right frame)

What does that mean exactly opplevelse for the less educated amongst us?

Good pics, seems to show the creation of a massive sub 960 eye (indicated by recon as well). I do hope this doesn't form.

It's very rare to see one of this size , although I do remember one from 2 or 3 years ago where the eye was nearly the size of the CDO. a little pluck cane not on this scale.

I've seen this presentation a few times before, most notably with Frances 2004, that also came in as a 2 with eventually a huge eye forming but its inner core remained a mess, looks like Ike has done the exact same thing.

Tides already at 7ft in Galveston, 2 and a half foot above Slosh model, if you add 2 and a half feet onto the slosh estimate...that means the surge would over top the Galveston seawall.

It might well be Frances I am think of, only 34 and already the years are merging. :o

If I remember rightly Frances had little convection at the time, it will be interesting to see what Ike does. (providing it doesn't make things much worse for those in Texs ! ).

Not a good time or place to be stranded!

GALVESTON, Texas — The Coast Guard says a freighter is stranded about 90 miles southeast of Galveston - in the path of Hurricane Ike. The Coast Guard early today received a radio call for help about a 584-foot bulk freighter, which is carrying 22 people. Petty Office Patrick Kelley told The Associated Press that the ship, hauling petroleum coke, broke down in the path of the hurricane "in a potentially dangerous situation
