A lovely image from a little over 15minutes ago that puts Ike's size in perspective. Ike really does take up the whole GoM

Sorry if this has already been said but has Hurricane ike had a maximum predicted wind speed? also will it be as bad as Katrina????

I take it reading is not one of your strong points?

Highest recorded gust so far has been 108.8knots at 122m AMSL, but this probably translates to about 95-100knots at ground level. Ike has been upgraded to cat 3 which means at least 100knot sustained winds.

Read the last coupole of pages of this thread for more info. Wind is not the issue, water and the storm surge will be the killer. and I am not sure what you mean by "worse" than katrina ... worse in what way?

Oh this will very much be the top story once Galveston looks similar to New Orleans after Katrina...the flooding could well be that bad by tomorrow morning....

Anyway surge already pushing inland across western LA and also the east Texas coast, western Galveston which does not have any sea wall and the sea is already several streets in and thats before the 1st high tide in around 3hrs time and 15hrs before landfall!

What appears to be a very ragged and very large eye (or at least a depression in the CDO) is appearing on the RAMSDIS Visible loop ... if an eye does descend, expect rapid intensification and tightening.

ABC showing Galvaston already badly flooded.... look real bad already.... wonder if the houses being flooded many hours before the highest winds make them less stable (ie waterlogged ground) and more suseptable to collapse?

Good question, I don't think it will make landfall until 9am uk time ?, Is this right ?.

Anywhen between 5am-9am at a guess. Sure it will be confirmed later on in another 6 hours or so.

lets hope not eh. am sure the residients are having a bad enough time of it without coming back to no home  the flooding can only get worse over the coming hours. wonder what the final surge height will be

RE: high and low tides the tidal range at Gaveston and surrounding costline is only about 1-2ft maximum so even a hit at low tide would not offer much relief from the surge.

(meant to post ages ago but building just got lightninged!)

Welll station 42316 has either blown away, or lost power with no change in any reported figures over the last hour ... which I doubt it coincidence

Next in the firing line is 42047
