Heavy rain here and it is only 9:15am. Could we see a thundersnow event tonight?

I think that the so called "Winter Storm has arrived earlier than anticipated. We have had heavy rain now since 0600am. I also believe that there has been rain in Wales and the Midlands which wasn't meant to arrive until 3pm. This rain should melt the snow. I guess things in life happen for a reason, in the way that the rain will do it's best to melt the snow before more comes down. Here is the Met Office weather warning:

UK regions: 60% East of England

60% Wales

60% South West England

60% London & South East England

Heavy Rain 1500 Mon 9 2359 Mon 9

Outbreaks of rain will be persistent and at times heavy. Accumulations of 25 to 35mm are expected. Combining this with melting snow, this may lead to localised flooding.

Issued at: 1225 Sun 8 Feb

UK regions: 60% East of England

60% Wales

60% South West England

60% West Midlands

60% London & South East England

60% East Midlands

Drifting Snow & Heavy Snow 1800 Mon 9 2359 Mon 9

Rain turning to snow in many places will give accumulations of 5 to 10cm generally and 15 to 20cm over hills. Some drifting is possible in the strong easterly winds.

Issued at: 1150 Sun 8 Feb

The ground is very wet round here at the mo, So im hoping if it does snow it has to be heavy for it to settle.

Interestingly, my temperature has dropped roughly 2 degrees since 6am, to 2.4C, DP dropping a similar amount to 1.6C and winds have swung from the SW to the SE... perhaps its moving through quicker than we thought.

Edit: It is still raning cats and dogs out there ... good covering of snow in general though

could be some bad floods at the end of this.with the snow melt today+rain then heavy snow

A winter storm is set to bring snow and heavy rain to parts of the UK.

It is due to arrive in southern England and Wales on Monday afternoon, spread to the Midlands and continue overnight into Tuesday, forecasters say.

It could bring up to eight inches of snow (20cm) in some areas, and 30 to 40 millimetres of rain in others.

from bbc glos

Lynxus the ECHO :o

Torrential rain is sweeping across Gloucestershire with a blizzard of snow to follow.

The rain has already started falling over some parts of the Stroud area and experts say it will slowly move across the rest of the county.

A severe weather warning for today for heavy rain and then snow later is in force from the Met Office.

It says there is a 60 per cent chance of heavy snow overnight tonight with up to 20cms falling over hills.

Commuters are being urged to consider leaving work early today to avoid the storms later.

Gloucestershire-based weather expert Ian Thomas described today's rain and snow storms as a severe winter storm.

Temperature rose very quick this morning, from 0oc to 3oc, however this has now levelled out and dropped slightly. 2.9oc here and considering I saw snow at 2.5oc yesterday, which settled due to the intensity, things aren't looking to bad.

On another note, Rivers around here are very high.

Upgrade for south, Met Office having low less deep and further south, should bring snow line down. GFS is doing a similar thing.
