lol, my chances of going next year are slipping away :)

Even if i can go next year it will end up being a bad June since June was better than May this year.

My bro is moving to Canada for 2 years, so might have to try some Canadian/U.S storm chasing at some point :) (Hi Gordon if you are reading!)

Hi Ross

The dvd arrived safely today. Have not had time to watch it yet, been painting.

iss016e027426.jpgStorm chase all you like, you'll never find a MONSTER like this - taken at 70,000ft over Mali, West Africa 2008

Oh Really!

You reckon do you - So how much do you want to bet I have not seen something on this scale. Read back through the threads from this year before making sweeping statements like that and you might find that around the 8th May we actually chased a Supercell that got up to 69,000 to 71,000ft near Brownwood in Texas.

And if you can be bothered to look further back you will see that I have chased a Supercell in 2005 that was 72,000ft, so sorry but you LOSE Your little bet.

:whistling::rolleyes:

Try reading threads 1st b4 wading in.

yes I agree with Paul...

Thats a baby compared to His above post Supercell..

and heres another mammoth...

the Superior NE supercell from June 22, 2003 ( just south of the famous Aurora hail event)

In summary, the mesocyclone diameter was ~ 20 km and had a differential velocity of ~ 118 m/s. Typical values are 3-10 km across and delta Vr of 25 m/s.

yes and they go to 70,000 odd feet..

So there are some monster's out there..lol

interesting bit of info this

In 2009, on the night of Monday May 25th, a supercell formed over Belgium. It was described by Belgian meteorologist Frank Deboosere as "one of the worst storms in recent years" and caused much damage in Belgium - mainly in the provinces of East Flanders (around Ghent), Flemish Brabant (around Brussels) and Antwerp. The storm occurred between about 1:00pm and 4:00pm local time. An incredible 30,000 lightning flashes were recorded in 2 hours - including 10,000 cloud-to-ground strikes. Hailstones up to 6 cm across were observed in some places and wind gusts over 90 km/h; in Melle near Ghent a gust of 101 km/h was reported.

Quick Q for Paul.S

The Supercell at the Lake was a LP is this correct?

and the Plainview/Brownville was HP?

Also are HP more intense in lightning than LP...On average in your experience even though the Lake Supercell was intense..

8 month's to Supercell vacation

Hi Pat

Yes the Oklahoma Lake Supercell was an LP Supercell, and the Brownwood Supercell was indeed an HP Supercell. HP Supercells always spit out much more Lightning although LP Supercells can contain bigger Hailstones than HP Beasts.

thx Paul,

Just wonted to clarify that..

Been doing some study on LP and HP Super cell's..

Brought a lot of info back which we discussed on the Highway's.

So interesting the dynamic's of the evolution of A Supercell.

More study tomorrow :whistling:

Fascinating stuff!!!

Hi Pat

How much did you learn whilst out on the highways? Which famous singer was born in Lubbock, Texas :whistling:

Ask Paul I am sure he knows.

I wouldnt know where to start Tom..

Here are some as follow's

1. Most Supercell's move from West to East across the States.

2. LP = Low Preciptitation Super cells are usaully Isolated.

3. HP = High Precipittation Super cells can be the most violent in nature.

4. The Western Flank is the best area I think to see a Twister.

5. The Western Side is where the Twister's Spawn but sometime's can produce elsewhere like the Wall Cloud.

6. I think the Western Side is the driest area of precip.

7. A thunder head becomes a Supercell when it goes into a MesoCycle stage like a minature low pressure

rotating within.

8. LP are usaully the best photogenic.

9. LP usaully produce more intercloud lightning than CG's HP more CG's.

10. The Western side is where the inflow winds feed the Storm.

11. The East side is the outflow where you get RFD winds wich can be damaging.

12. ?????the inflow wind's mix with the cooler wind's forcing strong

up draught's forcing rotation.

13. The Dome effect or Mother Ship is the end result of the cloud's over shooting the Anvil.

14. When the Turkey Tower's eventually break through the CAP the can be explosive in growth due to the amount energy that was built up.

15. The biggest hail stone was Coffeeville cant remember the size.

16. Immediate up draught's can cause lots of CG's

.

17. Mothership head's can reach 70,000+ft.

18. Lots of the time the Supercell's become more electric as the high top's cool toward's evening.

19. LP can die very quickly also after Sunset.

20. You can get embedded Supercell's in sqaull lines with MC'S

21. A Bow Echo is a sign on radar that a Mesocycle as formed.

22. HP's can do some strange thing's like split into right mover's and left mover's.

23. Only 30% of Supercell's produce Twister's???

24.Strong Lower Jet and a Strong upper Jet in the opposite direction can cause strong Shear.

25. Hence strong shear pushing the top to one side.

26. The dry line is two opposing pressure's...one moist and

one dry.

25. Plenty of Scud is a good indication a Twister could form.

Well there you have it feel free to correct me.

I havent googled this as this is sraight out of my head of the stuff I picked up.

Im sure there is more but cant remember at present.

I do know that thunderstorm's are NOT like Supercell's

Supercell's are in a league of there own truly,.

You havent seen a Supercell YOU hvent seen anything!!!

Last one....

27. Supercell's can occur anywhere if the condition's are met.

But MOST IF NOT NEAR ALWAY'S are found in the Plain's(USA) also India and Eastern Aussie land.

Like I say Paul or Tom correct any of the above.

I hope most is correct and I did pick up a lot of correct info.

28. Not forgetting Tail End Charley which can be the most strongest of Storm on a Squal line due to the Isolation.

28. Isolated Supercell's can suck all clouds and storm's in for up to 20 miles

29. Supercell's can hit the TROPOPAUSE

CAPE average from 3,000 to 9,000...if I remember correctly

SUPER CELL'S ARE TRULY SPECTACULAR

now how well did I do??

30. Cant remember where the hail core is?

I think it might be on the Western side

31. When you get Aqua sky this is a sign that large hail is present.

32.Strong Capping can cause a strong down draught's hence strong rotaion mixing with colder air.

and the person was Amy Whinehouse

THE DOME EFFECT

Hi mate....I think about the precip wrapping around is correct...not sure about the MC'S though

I thought it would be out of a Supercell...But remember Im learning myself.

By the way you would never look at a Thunderstorm in the same way again in euro after seeing these low pressure storm's..Truly SCFI stuff the lightning and cloud's..

you have to come along one day..you wont regret it
