Could be a few things, but I would imagine it is the downdraught from the within the cloud. Although the storm is moving NE, the downdraught would occur to the Western flank, thus moving the clouds in a W/NW direction. It could be the result of inflow winds - i.e. if the storm is still organising, it could be drawing on slightly moister air from the southern region, meaning the clouds along this path could be moving NW. It could also be rotation, keep your eyes peeled for possible funnels! :good:

The air flow around any form of shower or storm can be so turbulent, the winds and therefore the clouds can move in really any direction.

Hey Harry, thanks for that!

Havn't seen any funnels though!:good:

It's funny but the shower that's affecting my area currently has gone extremely slow moving and there's hardly any wind! I think it is backbuilding which is a good job as the radar shows there is nothing else to my west.

Hey peeps, a busy guy recently so i have not had the time to post on here.

It's currently around 21.6c with a dew of 15.7c so it's possible for some storms i would imagine, it has clouded over and some showers all be it very light are approaching me now. But the clouds/haze in the distance has a funny looking colour to it.

Will keep you all posted.

What are the storms like south of me then peeps? are they pretty intense.

Thought take a quick gander at the closest 12z sounding for today to see how it compares with the Herstmonceux one for yesterday - AKA 'the second August violent non-storm of 2009' :good:

I don't think this is more encouraging than yesterday, in fact a lot less, but there's a whole heap more happening out there at the moment!

Thanks for that Harry. Ever thought about becoming a storms forecaster for Netweather? :good: What with your wealth of knowledge on storm development.

This is precisely why this is my hobby and not a career, lol :good:

Not yet but the rain has just arrived and it's heavy :good:

It's cleared already so it was only a brief heavy shower.

GFS still shows a chance for storms on Friday for Wales, The Midlands and East Anglia. :D

Marginal Cape again but other ingredients a bit better than today again with better TT Index, Some LL Shear in place and slightly better lapse rates. :D

Again, will need watching over the next couple of days.

Yep, another day which hints at some storm potential plus another area of interest is the strength of the wind from the LP system. Mean wind speeds of 22mph with gusts of nearly 50mph acccording to the Met Office. If convection can occur then it could be quite a stormy day. :D

Well, on a W or NW flow, that leaves the SE in good stead! At the moment, the best place to be will probably be C and E Midlands and E Anglia, though I wouldnt be at all surprised if some jump across to Kent and Essex too :D

18z for Friday stays pretty similar if perhaps even better. Storm risk extends to Northern England too. LL Shear is even better, similar lapse rates, Cape a bit better even though pushed a little further north.
