UK Outlook for Wednesday 22 Feb 2012 to Wednesday 7 Mar 2012:

This period looks to be dominated by changeable, often unsettled weather, primarily moving in from the west. This means a risk of heavy rain and strong winds at times, and by the end of the period, rainfall totals, especially across southern areas, could be above average. Temperatures look to achieve around average values, but being late February/early March, there is still a risk of overnight frost, especially through any quieter, drier or clearer interludes. Near normal sunshine amounts are expected.

UK Outlook for Friday 24 Feb 2012 to Friday 9 Mar 2012:

This period looks likely to be dominated by changeable, often unsettled weather, primarily moving in from the west. There are indications that there could be heavy rain in some places, with a possibility of above average rainfall for some. With winds likely to be generally from a westerly direction, temperatures are probably going to be around average for the time of year. Being late February/early March, this suggests that overnight frosts are still possible, especially during any quieter interludes. Near normal sunshine amounts are likely.

So the MetO are still having none of it then if it's a cold spell your after, I think I'll stick with their forecast rather than any teleconnections, as they have been very accurate for well over a year now.

The "below average" possibility has been removed today. Good, frankly. It'll be march by then and my arthritic back can't cope with any further cold. If the operationals from today stick to their guns over the next couple of days with developments after the brief NW'ly i wouldn't be surprised to see that change further to "possibly above average" in time.

Today:

The end of February and first part of March are likely to see changeable weather. Temperatures are probably going to be around average for the time of year.

Yesterday:

The last few days of February and beginning of March are likely to see changeable weather. Temperatures are probably going to be average or below average for the time of year, particularly in the southeast.

That's different isn't it? Mind you, if GP's thoughts are correct then "below average" could well be making a return. at least in the shorter term (early next week) after the weekend cool down it looks like milder conditions will return from the southwest.

I think the key thing to note from that extended outlook is the suggestion of above average rainfall for central and southern England, you would not get this with a strong Azores high and a low track past Scotland so this would suggest the jet being further south with low pressure moving in at a more nw/se angle, some blocking would therefore be likely to the ne given this.

i did exactly the same when i went back to read it again - i thought i was beginning to lose control.

So Nick, that would suggest blocking where - to our northwest?

UK Outlook for Friday 2 Mar 2012 to Friday 16 Mar 2012:

Some signs of a quieter, more settled spell of weather for a time during the first few days of March, but conditions are then likely to become more unsettled. Temperatures are probably going to be around average for the time of year, and being early March this suggests that overnight frosts are likely at times. As conditions turn more unsettled showers or longer periods of rain are expected to become more prevalent, perhaps with some transient snow, this most likely in the north. Rainfall amounts over the period as a whole are likely to be near average across the UK, though confidence in this aspect is not high.

UK Outlook for Saturday 3 Mar 2012 to Saturday 17 Mar 2012:

During early to mid March, daytime maximum temperatures are likely to above average in northern areas. Some colder spells are likely during this period, with a small probability of being well below. Nighttime minimum temperatures follow a similar pattern, with mild nights most likely, occasionally some cooler ones, and some chance of it being rather cold. Further south, temperatures more likely to be around average, or perhaps slightly above, both by day and by night. Rainfall amounts look likely to continue being below average in eastern areas, particularly in the east of Scotland, but elsewhere average rainfall is most likely. Sunshine amounts should be above average in all areas.

UK Outlook for Thursday 8 Mar 2012 to Thursday 22 Mar 2012:

Northern and some western parts of the UK are expected to continue to be affected by spells of unsettled weather. As such, rainfall amounts here are likely to be near average with temperatures often near normal or mild for the time of year. Elsewhere, conditions will tend to be more settled so rainfall amounts look likely to continue below average, especially in eastern and southern Britain, whilst temperatures are most likely to be close or just above average by day and near or just below average by night, leading to a risk of frost. Sunshine amounts should be above average in all areas.
