This one is Marapi in the Phillipenes...as opposed to Merapi which has been going for a few weeks.

Pyroclastic flow has caught some climbers in the area, some have managed to broadcast out since.

There was zero warning of this eruption.

Another 12 hikers are missing after Sumatra's Mount Marapi shot a huge ash column into the air.

With events in recent years involving 'Volcano Tourism' at the likes of Mount Ontake, Etna, White Island, and now Marapi, I have to wonder how long and how many unsuspecting tourists need to perish before these International Tourism Agencies become regulated and/or controlled regarding any activity regarding Volcanoes. The 'guides' give the impression that they're Geoexperts when in reality they have little idea about Volcanology or dangers they're putting themselves & their clients in.

Iceland have it nailed down to a T when it comes to such regulation and control over 'Volcano Tourists', one could argue that the Icelandic Volcanoes are generally more benign but I would argue the case that this is due to constant monitoring of the dangers, and such dangers precedent the level of acceptable conditions which allow the trails and Tourism Agencies close or no access.

Looks like a slow burner for now.

Interesting piece here with a comparison to the Krafla Fires in the 70s with multiple intrusions with some erupting and some not.

Cor they weren't kidding, there's now another new volcano erupting in Iceland for the second time this year 😄 huge magma shoots at least 1000ft rising from the land east of Sylingarfell.

Wow, that is stunning, just when the Blue Lagoon announced their reopening over the weekend too. Not sure of exact location but hopefully away from any settlements etc.

Described on Twitter as the worst case scenario this eruption. Fissure around 3km long from first reports though may change when better understanding and more information comes in. Also noted was lava is rapid and spreading in all directions - power plant and Blue Lagoon nearby.

Latest update has this now down as 3.5km long.

How scary for residents and what a busy night to come for all the government and emergency response agencies. Eeeks. And a week before Christmas too... not good.

Output is currently estimated at 100 - 200 m3 per second (source: RUV) Litli Hrutur was around 20 m3 when it first erupted in July, reducing down to 8 m3 when I got there on July 20th.
