I don't think the Government should pay for an act of God. Airlines should have emergency funds set up to cover events like this.

Anyway hopefully these new guidelines are sufficient and repeated exposure to ash at low levels doesn't shorten the engine life more than expected. How long to the next eruption that's causes problems. Probably not in my life time.

http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/2010/04/icelands-volcano-heats-up.html

'High-resolution visible and thermal infrared images captured by a joint NASA-Japanese satellite sensor and compiled by University of Pittsburgh volcanologist Michael Ramsey provide the first clear glimpse of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull that has disrupted air travel worldwide since it began erupting April 14.

Ramsey, an associate professor in Pitt's Department of Geology and Planetary Science, collected images taken by NASA's Earth-orbiting Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflectance Radiometer (ASTER) instrument showing that although the volcano's infamous ash plume is receding, its internal temperature is rising.'

Very impressive and you can clearly see the two different eruptions on that webcam!

Shame the seismic activity seems to be dying down a little at the moment. I would love to see another big eruption.

Interesting how the two plumes are so different, one of ash and one of steam. Can anyone explain to me why?

Starting to see flames again from the ash eruption on this webcam

http://eldgos.mila.i...-fra-valahnjuk/

Worth watching as it gets darker I reckon.

Now at 23:05 can see it spitting lava bombs.

Flames also becoming visible on the Hovolsvelli webcam now and it seems to becoming more explosive with lava bombs being thrown much higher.

It looks stunning at the moment! Lovely view of the eruption.

Interestingly, by the end of the week, the winds will be coming from the north again so if this coincides with a bigger eruption, we may be affected by ash again!

There's something addictive about watching those bombs during the night! :-)

Here's hoping to an active summer!

Couldn't sleep so got up and checked the webcams. Glad I did!! A fantastic show at the moment. Some really high lava plumes (do you call them that?) at the moment.

Latest small Earthquakes are towards the Katla side of the glacier. Are these caused by magma movements underground?

magmamove.png

I think those are caused by magma movement AF. Maybe the first/second eruption sites haven't quite finished yet.

As to the quakes elsewhere on Iceland, they being talked about on Eruptions blog and they appear quite normal to most posters on that blog, mainly due to the standard plate tectonics of the area.

The webcams show the eruption at the moment, quite clearly b/w.

The Glacier must be quite badly destabilized by all this activity, the Útsýni frá Þórólfsfelli webcam and the http://picasaweb.google.com/102175391233488315229/EyjafjallajokullVolcano27thOfApril2010#5464760719199689650 link show this.

I think that there will be more activity here, possibly some sort of slide or lahar in the next few weeks.

Off work convalescing atm (dog bite left hand), Netweather and the Volcano on the net are great therapy IMO :p

Russ

Looks like the lava is slowly making its way down the glacier with the webcams on. How nice of it, that will make nice viewing, provided the weather holds re' the vis...

It has certainly been disgorging plenty of ash recently, look at the state of that glacier on the Porolfsfelli webcam!

Is that what is showing as steam along the top flanks of the glacier?

I noticed that and also there is steam lower down on the Mulakot cam.

I think it will look great when we start to see lava, I just hope the Volcano does not switch off before then, like the snow we nearly get in winter sometimes

Russ

Yes I think the steam is where the lava is CF

Ah the pleasures of living on the South Coastal area! Still, no earthquakes or volcanos! Nearly snow summs up Bognor most winters.

I am hoping the weather at least stays clear in the area of the volcano for another night at least as last nights views of the eruption were spectacular at times.

It may give us a view of lava on the glacier from the Porolfsffelli webcam which was out of action last night.

Sorry to hear about the dogbite! Still, nice to have the chance to volcano watch!

That SO2 chart shows that the volcano is well and truly still going strong.

I look forward to tonights viewing CF The dogbite is part through the bone, the painkillers the Doctor gave me are working however

Katla may have erupted under the glacier in 1955 I read somewhere last night b/w, which makes the threat from that direction a bit less, if true.

Lava has apparently travelled 1km so far.

That would probably explain the steam showing well down the mountain now, I was wondering if it was lava.

Rusty, that sounds like a really nasty bite!! made me shudder the thought of it going into the bone. take good care of it. No wonder you are off recovering!

A powerful dog I assume.

Thanks for the concern CF, just my pet lurcher fighting his son, I stupidly intervened lol

There seems to be debate now as to weather or not we will see lava soon, as apparently its moving very slowly.

The so2 from the volcano should improve the red sunset effect from this eruption if it passes over the UK, so far disappointing, one can only hope. At least SO2 doesn't effect air travel.

We had a superb red sunset the day after the eruption but I am very unsure if that was an effect of the volcano or not.

Where are you hearing about the lava flow? Will it be flowing down the glacier if it does?

Best way of seperating dogs is a hosepipe, mind you if they are anything like greyhound they will have done a lot of damage by the time you find one.

All the talk about lava is in between the discussion weather it was right to fly in ash and climate (heated lol) discussions on the eruptions blog.

I have been reading that blog since last year its great, one or two arguing people have cropped up over the last couple of days though. Bit like the MOD in winter

Looks like most of the snow has been covered in ash on the Mulakot webcam

Russ

Here is some news http://www.intlvrc.org/news.htm#eyja

More earthquakes some over mag 3 http://en.vedur.is/earthquakes-and-volcanism/earthquakes/tjornes-small/

The ash cloud seems to be rising a lot higher today, not sure if this is a sign of the wind becoming less strong or increased output though.

Uh Hmmm all that nice looking snow now looks rather black.

Looks like it's tapped into another source of water or the lava is causing the glacier melt back into the vent although in smaller amounts than previously.

It's getting rather tedious now and some seem incapable of controlling themselves. There are numerous blogs that cater for this sort of discussion - I wish they would just sod off to one of them!

It looks like someone has swept a chimney all over it. That will start melting from the top too, once the sun gains strength.

BTW, here's a pic of what all that hot stuff is doing to the ice. Note the nice channel running top to bottom & the arch feature towards the middle...

I'm just thinking if the Northerly comes off and the eruption picks up again there maybe more new standards for ash in the engines. :whistling:
