Gotta give somebody else a chance sometimes..

I may change this, but i expect a lot of blocking over Scandinavia combined with a -AO, so i will go for 10.3C, 1C below average.

What is the average May CET figure?

I love May it is my favourite month in lots of respects. It can be the best month of the year in terms of dry settled sunny weather.

It also can be a month of huge contrasts bringing great extremes i.e. snow and frosts and heatwaves with temps above 30's, though have to admit to get such extremes in one calandar month would be very unusual.

Until I know the average CET I can't give a figure. Not expecting it to be particularly warm unfortunately I have to say, negative NAO and AO signal will kill the chances even though the azores high will desperately try to be the dominating factor, heights will inevitably develop in the wrong place leaving us open to northerly airstreams..

Here are the averages

1961-90 11.2C

1971-00 11.3C

Last 10 years 12.2C

Highest on record is 15.1C in 1833, which is 1.2C higher than the closest other May, 1848 13.8C.

Lowest on record is 8.5C in 1698

The CET for May has been 12.1C four times in the last 10 years. Last below average May was 1996.

I don't think this month will be all that far from average, but we are well overdue a below average one, so I'll go with 11.0C

Looks like May could be off to a cool start, with some cold Northery winds, so probaby 10.7*C.

Seeing as my April guess was way underestimated, Im going to go for a slightly below average month, I cant see May being warm judging from the latest teleconnections. So Im going for 11.0C

A difficult call because a cool to even a cold start to the month and it will take a while to recover, however, a strong warm last third to bring it to 11.7C

  • April 2024 - Was it that cold overall? A look at the statistics

General perception from many is that April was a cold month, but statistics would suggest otherwise, with the average temperature for the whole month coming in just above the 30 year average for the UK as a whole.
